Peggy Lee was a jazz singer, songwriter, composer and actress who gained prominence in the 1940s with her first hit, "Somebody Else is Taking My Place". She then went on to have a career that lasted almost seven decades.
Witherspoon acquired the rights to the story from Lee's estate after meeting with Holly Foster-Wells, Lee's granddaughter. She then went to Nora Ephron to pen the script. The two had worked together previously on the "Legally Blonde" franchise.
