Marvel Studios released "Thunderbolts", a gritty anti-Avengers tale that's equal parts absurdist romp, psychological drama, and redemption story, back in May. While the film may not restore the MCU's golden age box office glow, earning a modest $382,292,181 globally, it does offer something strangely endearing. Now, fans can relive the action with the release of the "Thunderbolts": Limited-Edition 4K/Blu-ray Steelbook on July 29.

The film begins with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh; Dune: Part Two) reflecting on her past while infiltrating a high-tech lab in Malaysia-a moody, symbolic start that sets the tone. What follows is a globe‑trotting story where she's roped into a clandestine mission by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis‑Dreyfus; VEEP), only to discover she's a pawn in a far more sinister endgame. She's soon joined by fellow outcasts Ghost (Hannah John‑Kamen; Ready Player One), Red Guardian (David Harbour; Stranger Things), John Walker (Wyatt Russell; Night Swim), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan; The Apprentice), and the wildcard: Bob/Sentry (Lewis Pullman; Top Gun: Maverick).

"The twist? They were all sent to eliminate each other. Instead, they rebel, realizing that Valentina is tying up her loose ends."

Florence Pugh continues to dazzle as Yelena, anchoring the film with her sarcastic delivery and grounded emotional heft. Sebastian Stan's evolution as Bucky Barnes remains one of the MCU's more underrated arcs, while Wyatt Russell leans into the chaos of being the world's least‑liked Captain America.

But it's David Harbour's Red Guardian who injects Thunderbolts with its much‑needed levity. His endearing cluelessness and brute honesty are perfectly timed amid the heavy themes. Meanwhile, Lewis Pullman's Bob/Sentry is a dark horse standout-unpredictable, unsettling, and ultimately unforgettable.

Director Jake Schreier (Paper Towns) and writers Eric Pearson (Black Widow, Transformers One) and Joanna Calo (The Bear) take bold creative swings here. Instead of wall‑to‑wall action, "Thunderbolts" leans heavily into psychological drama, ethical ambiguity, and even mental health/addiction themes. This won't please every Marvel fan, especially those still craving Endgame‑style epic battles, but it's hard not to appreciate the film's commitment to charting new territory.

At times, this tonal gamble leads to pacing issues. The second act occasionally drags under the weight of its themes, but Schreier keeps the film afloat with a sense of irreverent confidence and grounded tension. The humor may be blacker and the violence more personal, but it's undeniably Marvel.

Technically, Thunderbolts is top‑tier. The Ultra HD Blu‑ray presentation is exceptional, rendered from 4.5K/6.5K sources and finished in 4K. While the color palette is intentionally muted, the visual detail is crisp, especially in expansive wide shots and low‑lit sequences.

The Dolby Atmos mix is immersive and well‑balanced, delivering heart‑thumping action sequences, especially during scenes involving Sentry's destructive chaos and The Void's eerie soundscape. Dialogue clarity is strong throughout, and bass effects rumble without distortion.

Special Features & Packaging: A Steelbook Worth Owning
The Limited‑Edition Steelbook includes:

  • Deleted scenes - "Door is Unliftable" and "Gary Announcement"
  • Behind‑the‑scenes features like "Assembling a Team to Remember" and "Around the World and Back Again"
  • A deep dive into Pullman's triple‑role performance in "All About Bob, Sentry & The Void"
  • Director's commentary by Jake Schreier

The packaging is creative, with embossed character art that holds narrative significance after viewing the film.
