Disney+ adapts Hideo Kojima’s post-apocalyptic epic into a 2D animated series
Disney+ has announced an ambitious new project for anime fans and gamers alike – Death Stranding Isolations, a Japanese animated series based on the acclaimed post-apocalyptic game Death Stranding. The series hails from legendary video game creator Hideo Kojima, the mind behind Metal Gear and the original Death Stranding franchise.

The reveal took place during the Disney APAC Showcase at the Disneyland Hotel in Hong Kong, where Kojima appeared on stage to share insights into the project. “I grew up loving Japanese anime, and it has shaped my worldview. I've always been a fan of Disney, since I was small, and I was glad that they showed my documentary on the platform. When they approached me, I decided to work with them,” Kojima said.
A new chapter in Sam Bridges’ fractured America
Death Stranding Isolations is set within the same world as the original video game, following protagonist Sam Bridges as he continues his mission to reconnect a fractured America. The anime will expand upon the game's central themes of isolation, connection, and survival. Its ensemble of new and returning characters each grapple with loneliness in their own ways – an old man seeks salvation beyond human connection, a female warrior fights to resurrect a world driven by conflict, a boy harbors deep resentment toward Bridges, and a young girl has learned to embrace solitude. As the world teeters on the edge of extinction, their stories intersect in a gripping exploration of human resilience and despair.
Global vision and traditional 2D animation
“We want this to be a global animation project, with global talent,” added Sano, underscoring the production's international ambitions.
Directed by Takayuki Sano (Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods) and produced by E&H Production (Project Bullet/Bullet), the upcoming anime will be crafted through traditional 2D hand-drawn animation, a deliberate choice meant to preserve the tone that made the game such a phenomenon.
