Rob Reiner, the influential filmmaker and actor whose career reshaped both television and cinema, has died at the age of 78. Reiner and his wife, producer and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead Sunday afternoon inside their Brentwood, California, residence, setting off an extensive homicide investigation by Los Angeles authorities.

First responders were dispatched to the home shortly after 3:30 p.m. following a request for medical assistance. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, a man and woman were pronounced dead upon arrival. Family representatives later confirmed the victims were Rob Reiner and his wife, with police describing the deaths as an apparent homicide. Investigators continued searching the property for evidence as the surrounding block was closed to the public.

The circumstances of the couple's deaths stunned the entertainment industry and political leaders alike, triggering an outpouring of grief for a man whose work left an indelible mark on American culture.

Born in 1947 in the Bronx, Reiner was raised in a household steeped in comedy and performance. His father, Carl Reiner, was a television pioneer, while his mother, Estelle Reiner, was an actress and singer. The family later relocated to California, where Reiner attended Beverly Hills High School before enrolling in UCLA's film program.

Reiner became a household name in the early 1970s as Michael "Meathead" Stivic on "All in the Family", a series that didn't just dominate ratings but helped redefine what network television could say about American life. His portrayal earned multiple Emmy nominations and wins, and the show remained the top-rated program on television for several years.

After stepping away from acting full-time, Reiner transitioned behind the camera-an evolution that launched one of the most respected directing careers in modern film history.

Reiner's directorial debut, "This Is Spinal Tap", initially flew under the radar before becoming one of the most influential comedies ever made. What followed was an extraordinary streak of films that blended emotional depth with popular appeal, including "Stand By Me", "The Princess Bride", "When Harry Met Sally…", "Misery", and "A Few Good Men".

Several of these titles were later selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. He was particularly proud of "Stand By Me", often citing its emotional authenticity as the closest reflection of his own life and sensibilities.

Reiner's personal life often intersected with his work. During production on "When Harry Met Sally…", he met Michele Singer, a relationship that ultimately altered the film's famously hopeful ending. The two married in 1989 and later welcomed three children together. Reiner also maintained close ties to his first wife, actress Penny Marshall, with whom he shared a daughter and a long creative history. Though their marriage ended years earlier, the two remained close until Marshall's death in 2018.

Outside Hollywood, Reiner was deeply engaged in political and social causes. He was a leading advocate for marriage equality, co-founding the American Foundation for Equal Rights, and was active in public health and Democratic political campaigns. Known for his outspoken views, Reiner remained engaged in national discourse well into his later years.

Even in his seventies, Reiner showed no signs of slowing down. He continued acting in films and television and had recently returned to one of his most iconic creations, beginning work on "Spinal Tap II" in 2024.

As authorities work to piece together what happened inside the Reiners' Brentwood home, the focus for many has turned to Rob Reiner's lasting legacy built on laughter, empathy, and stories that continue to resonate across generations.
