Today, Disney announced the long-awaited live-action version of Mulan will premiere on Disney+ on September 4th, as well as opening in theaters simultaneously. Disney released the animated version in 1998 and this new version was originally slated for a March 27th release before theaters were shut down due to the pandemic.
Disney CEO Bob Chepak said it was important to find new avenues of distribution during the pandemic, therefore "in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and a number of countries, we will be offering on Disney+, the epic Mulan, on premiere access beginning Sept. 24, the price point being $29.99 in the U.S."
On July 23, Disney took Mulan off the calendar temporarily which was unfortunate timing as it was on the same day when AMC announced they'd be reopening slowly around the country by mid-August.
The film stars Liu Yifei as Mulan, the young woman who disguises herself as a man to take her father's place in the Imperial Army. Supporting cast members include Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li.
