Evil Dead Burn How Much Gore Is Too Much? 4K Review

Hey everybody and welcome back to the channel. Izola here with FlickDirect and I got my hands on the 4k UHD release of Evil Dead Burn and I have some thoughts for you. So grab your popcorn, sit back, relax, and let's get this started. So let's jump right into the movie. This follows Alice who is pretty much trying to deal and grieve from the death of her husband.

so she decides that she's going to visit her fractured in-laws which that's always a great way to start a movie and let's add on to this that they live in a very isolated rural area because i mean why not and of course things go from just naturally a tragedy a family tragedy to living hell when they come across the Necronomicon. Just to start this off, I'd probably say that the plot is pretty...

You can figure out what's going to happen, but I do have to say that the director, Vanacek, does a really good job bringing this unhinged and intensely claustrophobic atmosphere to the big screen. Also to your tiny screen, depending on how big your television is. The family dynamic is extremely broken, which I think some of us can relate to. But the actors, especially Suheila Yacoub, delivered just really amazing performances.

Especially with what you're actually dealing with. I mean, it was, there were some really raw emotions throughout the movie. Actually, I would probably say it's more before the madness begins, but I mean, you could say the emotions are still raw. But, I mean, we all know what's happening, you know, after the initial back with the family. Now, once the Deadites take hold, the movie obviously changes from this intense grief drama to just absolute onslaught of relentless stomach-churning gore.

I mean, let's just put it that way. It pretty much takes any type of OG feeling from the older movies of slapstick humor just to pure unfiltered torment. uh you know if if you're a little sensitive maybe not the best movie for you to watch we've got a few repetitive things in the plot and it's kind of predictable i kind of feel that this movie as well as a lot of other movies that have come out focus more on effects and gore versus an actual plot line so I think I would have liked more thought put into the plot versus just made it a little I don't want to say smarter but it just it needed a little more and instead of kind of gripping us with the plot it's gripping you or in my case just getting bored of all the excessive gore.

I think for me, I just wanted a little more of the old school campiness and just dark comedy kind of stuff because that's what made these movies so great. Overall, it's an interesting watch. Like I said, there's a lot of blood and gore. And I think that the effects kind of took hold of the overall movie but it's still fun you'll still enjoy it and so because of this I'm giving the movie a three out of five now let's talk about the video obviously we're getting this on the 4k ultra hd in the 2160p resolution and you know you're getting it fortified with a dolby Vision and HDR10.

So very traditional now with what we're getting with the 4k releases. Now let's start off with the pros. This absolutely showcases the fine detail of the movie in itself. I really have to say they did a great job on the transfer for this. The practical effects and the gore are sickeningly realistic. I mean, like really realistic. So again, faint of heart, do not watch because it's, you're going to, you'd probably get a little sick.

You see every tear in the flesh, every snap in the bone. I mean, and the, the wet texture, because obviously blood is wet. I love it. It's the textures just, I have no words for it because you're just like, Ooh, Ooh, I feel like I'm in the ER right now. This is just not, and I've, I've seen some stuff. This is, it's very realistic. So buyer beware.

The Dolby vision really does an amazing job with transforming the film's dark, decaying, um, farmhouse setting. Again, remember they're, they're in the backwoods like this it's going to be dark and spooky and just old and decaying so definitely did a great job with that deep blacks are incredibly stable and it just provides this really great shadowing in a lot of well most of the movie because it's really dark movie especially dimly lit basements and night scenes I mean it's again it's that kind of movie so it really does do a great job of picking up those those deep black colors now the cons are really not the movie's fault itself well I mean it could be because they could have added some in different areas but it relies heavily on this dark dreary drab kind of color palette because a if it does take place during the evening or in just low-lit areas.

So you're not really going to get those popping, vibrant colors that you wouldn't normally get from other movies. They just don't jump off the screen. I mean, yeah, the blood is red, but you're not really getting it to pop like you would in other HDR releases. I mean, is it worth the 4K upgrade from the Blu-ray? Oh, Absolutely. It's still got great contrast and the shadow stability, like all of that is really, really well done.

So I don't think that you will be disappointed with the 4K upgrade. And because of this, I'm giving it a four and a half out of five. And now onto the audio Warner Brothers. Wow, not holding back on this one. The disc features a reference quality Dolby Atmos track, so and you know how much I love it, and I'm glad that they didn't, you know, cheapen out on that.

It's just engineered to terrify you, so be prepared. So for this, the soundstage is wide and intensely active, so if you do have surround sound, it's going to be working overtime on this movie, so get ready for that the overhead height channels used brilliantly especially when you're trying to trace the movements of the deadites like i mean you just hear scurrying across it oh it's just oh it's just great because they scurry it's great i told you this one's going to be a little terrifying so maybe if you don't have surround sound that's probably a good thing also they did a great job with this precise movement with the camera.

So when the camera moves a certain way, the sound kind of goes with it. And it's just, it's so immersive. It really, really is. I think you'll be very happy with the audio on this one. There's also going to be some wet, squishy sounds. I'm sorry, but you know, when, when you watch horror movies like this and there's a lot of gore, you're going to get a lot of sounds like that.

So it's going to sound gross. It really is, but it works. I mean, it works really well. And again, if you don't have surround sound, you're still not going to have to worry about it not working. It really does. Like they just did a great job, whether it's just mono or the surround, you won't be disappointed with the sound. Audio quality is great. I really don't have any cons.

I mean, I would be nitpicking if I I think that they really paid a lot of attention to make sure that you're getting the best bang out of your buck for audio quality. So because of this, I'm giving it a five out of five. And now on to the extras. Warner Brothers did a good job on this as well, although it's not the best we've ever had. But remember, I'm not giving this a score because we're just not really getting much from the studios for these things.

Just not worth it to score it. But they did give us some great behind the scenes stuff. So let me go and just kind of give you a brief update of what you're getting with that. So you're going to get some audio commentary, some interviews with the cast, Evil Dead, Blazing the Trail, which is like a deep dive featurette. It explores how like the team kind of came up and crafted everything, especially the brutal practical effects and transformations.

So you're going to definitely get a really good idea of what they go through making the movie, essentially. You will also have deleted and extended scenes, which, you know, I'm always happy for because I like extras. No bloopers. I mean, I'd probably be dead tired filming, not even paying attention to being funny. So, you know, who knows? There probably could have been some, but again, we normally don't get any anymore.

But you also get the digital copy. So again, not anything to blow your socks off, but you still get some fun stuff in there. Overall, I think the 4K UHD of Evil Dead Burn is a great addition, especially if you are a super horror fan or a fan of the franchise. Again, it's a little different. the plot had some repetitive pieces and I think they could have just done a better job adding a little more depth to it but I think in this day and age more just go for excessive gore and I just find that boring unfortunately I just miss the OG you know I want the dark humor I want the cheesy campiness, you know, but just on a more elevated level because we're in 2026, not, you know, the eighties or nineties or whatever.

So again, the movie could have done a little more for me, but there were a lot of things that were done well that made it really watchable. Audio and video top-notch extras. You get some fun stuff. So you've got a little extra to watch. Overall, I'm going to give the 4k UHD release of Evil Dead Burn a four out of five. Now the Steelbook has officially released.

Again, if you are a fan of the franchise or excessive gore and just love horror movies. You will want this in your library.
