hi guys we can't talk about it alright let's talk about solar agents wearing a Jersey we've gotta make them a fake ID so we can swear Ellison is making Shawn a fake ID so he can drink underage and swear all right guys we're focusing we need to talk about the hilariously funny solar opposites tell me what you thought when you first read the script for funny that's what seriously I thought funny funny funny good script and I thought surprising too like there was some stuff in those like the second actors like oh we really go like it really moves action all the time action it's great is there anything that surprised you is there anything that that you thought oh this is really good I never thought of this I'm sorry well I kind of like how it's there's like a whole kind of like sitcom family aspect to it which I didn't pick up on right away as like well that's actually pretty cool to have then but make it aliens and make it a basalt like a bizarre coupling of them and then and then drop them in a suburb but it was pretty fun yeah the whole idea was kind of surprising to me when I first ready like everything about the about America are you the ones that you do you love everything yes what you Percy went Jesse's favorite part about America uh she just likes I she tries to like everything I think her favorite part is the learning learning new things learning about a new place I wonder I in my mind maybe down the road she might get a little homesick I'm thinking I'm gonna bring it up to the writers I'm gonna try to insert myself into every aspect I'm doing some janitorial work as well if she gestures like a just a sweet he's a rebel rebellious yeah I think I'm smoking and drinking wait oh yeah he is he was before I knew what we're gonna be on Noah but yeah you're my character so what's it like working with me oh it's awesome there yeah and creative and they're just cool they there was one thing we don't get to hang out that much because it's with animation I guess it's like a tight schedule but there's been a couple times where they were like passing around like Japanese candies and we were looking at memes you think their words happen is candy there's no wrong answers if you have an idea welcome with your idea welcome to the table of ideas [Music] yeah it's okay so we know a little bit about Jesse now she likes everything but maybe she's gonna go home sick but what about whose name I cannot pronounce at all right yeah I mispronounced it at the start to its young Alec and he's kind of a more serious guy that he was he was like one of corvo's phalanges and corvo's like the mission leader and he kind of wants to get off this kid offer and kind of try and find a new isolated planet or something so he um he likes in that flavor a character so he's more serious he's going to school with Jesse and care about learning Jesse cares about learning you just want to like figure out how you can kind of like you want to just be in charge and and I'm in control of those but you can't because the bullies still pick ya in a hard place you're in a hard place young you lack so they're aliens but they're kind of going through the same things that everybody else is going through really crazy and how an alien in the writers Minds would go through having spoken to them I can only imagine I actually had to confide and Shawn that part of the script was a fear I used to have reoccurring nightmares when in when I was a kid in school I would have been very close to the script and I was like I'm having flashbacks it's I don't know how they thought of this it was like my worst reoccurring nightmare and it's in the script and it's just be funny yeah it is really weird it's something New York yeah sometimes you've all get on this wave the same mental wave and then you get an accidental glimpse of the dark parts of somebody's brain I don't know [Music] 20 20 on so thank you guys for talking with us today really nice to meet you so nice hi guys that's what I do with my boogers it's flicks like like a move right someone some face time like the name of the lead character from a bug's life get out of here hi how are you I'm good how you guys doing good where did the idea from this come from when we were working on recognize season three we wanted to do a show season two season two that was just super fun very late season two and Justin had these characters that were like good morning had some fun no no it is fun talking about it it's a great fun Ricky Morty's fun but we wanted to do something of us like similar fun go ahead go ahead tell her that tell her what you told him you have these characters [ __ ] idea long time ago whatever just all our opposites was in my head and too weird it was the odd couple but aliens on a mission on earth right it was gonna be live-action it's totally different what we did and then I grabbed this guy cuz I was like I'm not having fun right now just getting this guy no I was like what do you think about this idea then and then and then he came in and we completely reinvented the whole thing and turned it into what it is now which is night and day from the thing I had forever ago which was live-action did I say that yeah okay whatever anyway so yeah and then and and and that the idea was like you know let's do a show that's you know Rick and Morty are very specific characters and they're and the family and like the sort of dichotomy of that world and Rick is such a complex character and we're like would it be fun to write a show with a bunch of aliens that are sort of immigrants or that are none of them our Rick none of them are as smart as Rick none of them are because when you're ready Rick and Morty it's like Rick has always always got to be the smartest guy in the room he always you never want to see Rick be like confused or behind the curve and and that's hard when you're writing a show it's really [ __ ] hard and our aliens are always confused and behind yeah and and honestly it makes it really fun to write because they're they have all they have access to all this sci-fi stuff from their ship like a ton and so there's a bunch of crazy sci-fi you know weapons shenanigans like like all sorts of stuff but they're they're not like Rick they're not like smart about it they're sort of like using it because they're misunderstanding cultural things on earth or there there's just a there truly are like an immigrant it's an immigrant story but with aliens and and great sci-fi stuff yeah and then and then there's a split between the family of like you know hanging on to their homeworlds culture and and and ideologies and stuff and then and then really adopting earth culture and being excited about like you know from going to the movies and eating popcorn to watching football to playing video games to Kardashians or love laughter lock up you know reality shows whatever very pop-culture very culture and just and also the misunderstanding of what's real and what isn't and there's just a ton of fun stuff that that they kind of they don't know I said it's great you're gonna spring 2020 check it out Solar opposites it's a hit show hopefully we know already so tell me what it's like working with Hulu I [ __ ] hate it no no I'm kidding no it's great there have been really really a man they really have the thing we pitched them and this never happens the thing we pitch them about like stuff we wanted to do in the season we got to do it and then as we saw everything coming in and it was exactly what we wanted to do who that was on our side the entire time and then that we're gonna drop them all at once we got to write it in a way that none of us had ever gotten to write a show before with all this serialization and you know it was just a joy it was awesome it really was the joy I've never worked on a show where what we pitched actually 80% of it actually made it into the show yeah yeah really amazing and 22 because we share a wall of brick and Morty so much yeah you can pop over and hang with Rick and Morty and then we're literally on the other side of sobbing yeah and it's not just a joy it is joy my friend joy she's very he's a big also I don't did I mention that the aliens are genderless they're they're plant based instead of genitals they just have a hump yeah they're plant based so it's so the way they reproduce is I'll kind of tip of their finger or tip of the toe off and plant it in very special soil that's not available on earth at home deep although who knows maybe they have brought some on their ship yeah I don't know I don't know how that would adopt into the yeah we don't know we just went into a really weird dark place on a very sexy little humps are great yeah they're sexy very sexy feels sexy show this show sex appeal level 10 not appropriate they like to FlickDirect their humps [Music]
ABOUT THE INTERVIEWER
ABOUT SOLAR OPPOSITES
Co-created by Justin Roiland (co-creator of Ricky and Morty) and Mike McMahan (former head writer of Rick and Morty), Solar Opposites centers around a team of four aliens who have escaped their exploding home world, only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Justin Roiland) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambroni) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty, while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love humans and all their TV, junk food, and fun stuff. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.
