Robert Kurtzman and Andrew Divoff Reveal the Stories Behind Two Horror Favorites
Robert Kurtzman and Andrew Divoff sit down with FlickDirect's Allison Rose to revisit Wishmaster and From Dusk Till Dawn, sharing stories about practical effects, filmmaking, and the creation of one of the 1990s horror's most memorable monsters.
Kurtzman traces his journey from an Ohio monster-movie fan to a special effects artist and filmmaker, and recalls how his original concept for From Dusk Till Dawn grew from a small independent film he intended to direct into a genre classic. He also discusses directing Wishmaster, developing its visual effects, and why Andrew Divoff became his choice to play the Djinn.
Divoff reveals what it was like performing beneath the elaborate Djinn prosthetics, why he wanted the human Nathaniel Demerest to feel even creepier than the monster, and how he discovered the character's distinctive voice. Kurtzman also shares the wild story of the production's camera truck being stolen, and of seeing it pursued by police on the news, with cameras flying out the back.

ABOUT WISHMASTER
Gemologist Alexandra Amberson unknowingly unleashes an ancient evil when a priceless opal containing a powerful Djinn is damaged, and its imprisoned occupant escapes. Taking human form, the creature begins granting wishes to anyone desperate enough to make them, twisting every request into a horrifying and often deadly outcome while gathering the souls it needs to increase its power.
As Alex discovers the truth behind the mysterious deaths surrounding her, she learns that the Djinn’s ultimate goal is far more dangerous than personal revenge. If she makes three wishes, the barrier between worlds will collapse and unleash an army of Djinn upon humanity. With the creature manipulating everyone around her, Alex must find a way to outwit a being whose greatest weapon is giving people exactly what they ask for.
