Tron: Ares Update, Predator News & Stunt Performer Recognition

Speaker 1: Hey everybody and welcome back to this week's episode of Flick News. Speaker 1: Izola here with FlickDirect and I've got a few things to update you on in movie news. Speaker 1: So grab your popcorn, sit back, relax, and let's get this started. Speaker 1: Okay, so we're going to start off with some very, very big news that I am super excited about.

Speaker 1: And although it's not actually part of just one movie in particular, Speaker 1: it actually encompasses a part of what makes movies movies. Speaker 1: especially action movies and what I'm trying to get at is that stunts are now going to be part Speaker 1: of the Oscars and I've said it time and time again especially after Fall Guy Speaker 1: that it just needs to be recognized the stunt performers the action sequences themselves and Speaker 1: I know we do have certain categories in the Oscars, but stunts in general have never been Speaker 1: recognized.

We'll randomly say something, but overall, they're kind of taken advantage of, Speaker 1: if you think of. There's really nothing there, and these people put their lives on the line Speaker 1: every single day trying to get those shots just so we have a great movie. Just think about movies Speaker 1: like Mission Impossible, the John Wick movies. I mean, I can go on and on about how many movies Speaker 1: have action sequences that have stunt doubles performing these stunts Speaker 2: just Speaker 1: so that we can Speaker 1: be entertained.

And yes, I know Tom Cruise pretty much tries to do all of his own stunts, Speaker 1: even though they stop, or at least try to stop him. But how do you stop him? So I just think Speaker 1: this is really great and the Academy did acknowledge this and say for the 100th Oscars, Speaker 1: which is 2028, I believe, we will actually have some categories or at least one.

So obviously Speaker 1: there's not a lot of details in it yet, but they do want to acknowledge stunts, stunt crews, Speaker 1: etc. So hopefully this will be a really great addition. I personally think it will, but Speaker 1: You know, it's just dependent on what categories, you know, are added and how they recognize them. Speaker 1: So like I said, I'm really excited about this.

Speaker 1: I really think it's long overdue. Speaker 1: I mean, if we're already at 100 Oscars at this point or getting there, they should have had at least something by now. Speaker 1: Wouldn't you agree? Speaker 1: Okay, so now to actually speak about an actual movie, which again, I think stunts are extremely important, but I know you guys are here to also talk about this stuff.

Speaker 1: So we got some news that Robert Pattinson's name has been thrown into the pot for the villain in Dune 3, Messiah. Speaker 1: I know. Speaker 1: I mean, it's really probably not that long of a list, but I think he's at the top. Speaker 1: you know so this is what we've heard thus far and the word is that Villanueva and Legendary Speaker 1: are looking to have him play the role of Sightail Speaker 2: which is a Speaker 1: shape-shifting face dancer which I'm Speaker 1: just I love these weird characters in the Dune franchise and if you've read the books it's not Speaker 1: too far off.

Like it's just, it's a very weird wild ride, but I absolutely love it. And I highly Speaker 1: recommend reading the books. I know again, we're talking movies. If you don't, I don't want to say Speaker 1: have the attention span, but it's just, you just rather visually watch something to understand it Speaker 1: versus read it. I totally get it. Um, at least these movies are not being rushed too much and Speaker 1: giving you like the full Dune experience as much as they can on the big screen.

So, Speaker 1: and I'm sure I'm missing some things because it has been a long time since I've read the book. Speaker 1: I'm actually staring at it right now. So may start that back up again. Now, nothing is official yet. Speaker 1: Again, this is just the word on the streets. As the kids say, I don't know who says that. Speaker 1: I really don't. But it's one of those things where how could you pass up the opportunity?

Speaker 1: It just seems like this is a major role in the third movie. I mean, Speaker 2: the villain plays Speaker 1: a major, major role. So it's kind of like a fun, I would think it's a fun role. And also the cast, like, how do you kind of pass that up with everybody that's in it? Speaker 1: Oh, and let's not forget that Jason Momoa has been teasing that his character's coming back.

Speaker 1: I mean, I know we all saw him die, but did we really? Speaker 1: Did he really die? Speaker 2: Read the book Speaker 1: or wait till the movie to find out. Speaker 1: But yeah, so he's been teasing that as well. Speaker 1: So it just really looks like this weird, wild adventure is just going to be even crazier with this final movie. Speaker 1: And I am ready for this ride for sure.

Speaker 1: Hopefully you are too. Speaker 1: I can't wait to hear what else is coming down the pipeline. Speaker 1: Obviously, we don't really have too much more than what I'm giving you, which is not even a confirmation. Speaker 1: But it's kind of exciting, fun news, even if it's a rumor. Speaker 1: But be sure to tune back in. Speaker 1: And if I do get any more information, I will definitely let you guys know.

Speaker 1: So back in 2022, Dave Trachtenberg gave us a kind of refresh on the Predator franchise with Prey. Speaker 1: If you guys have not seen that movie, it is so good. Speaker 1: It kind of reminded me of my childhood when I saw the first Predator movie, right? Speaker 1: Like it's just edge of your seat, just really, holy crap, what's going to happen next?

Speaker 1: And it really needed this just refresh. Speaker 1: And it's not a reboot because it takes place, what, in the 1719, I believe. Speaker 1: And so it's basically taking you way, way back and starting completely new. Speaker 1: So it's not trying to reinvent a broken wheel, you know, because after a while, you know, you keep trying to do things on the same.

Speaker 1: It just it just doesn't work. Speaker 1: Not that the other movies were horrible. Speaker 1: It's just you kind of expect what's coming and you just, you expect more, right? Speaker 1: I guess would be the best way to put it. Speaker 1: Now, the reason I bring this up is because we have something new. Speaker 1: It's the animated anthology called Predator Killer of Killers.

Speaker 1: And that's actually going to be dropping on Disney Plus in June. Speaker 1: So it's already April. Speaker 1: we don't have that much time to wait you know for this to come out and I'm super stoked about it Speaker 1: now the great thing about this is that this is not just one setting or one era you actually have Speaker 1: multiple throughout this movie and I think that's just another great way of kind of giving us more Speaker 1: to the franchise we're getting a viking setting where there is a warrior on a revenge quest with Speaker 1: her son.

We have a ninja squaring off with his samurai brother in feudal Japan, which I'm super Speaker 1: stoked about. And then to top it off, we've got a World War II fighter pilot in a dog fight trying Speaker 1: to fight off aliens. I mean, come on. Like, it just doesn't get any better than this. We've got Speaker 1: Vikings. We've got feudal Japan. We've got World War II.

I mean, it's, I know we can do so much Speaker 1: more, but holy cow, like these are, these are going to be some, some great things. And also, Speaker 1: if you have watched the Arcane, um, or Blue-Eyed Samurai, it's the same animation concept. So you're Speaker 1: kind of getting this really cool look of it. Uh, at first when I saw Arcane, I was a little hesitant Speaker 1: because it was definitely a newer type of Speaker 2: animation, Speaker 1: but it worked so well.

Speaker 1: And I really think that this is going to work with this as well. Speaker 1: So I'm just so excited and can't wait for this. Speaker 1: Now, don't forget, we've got Predator Badlands in November coming out, Speaker 1: and then we also have Prey 2 on the way as well. Speaker 1: So it's a pretty darn cool time to be one of these, you know, Speaker 1: alien fans or, you know, be into alien hunting.

Speaker 1: So, or alien hunters, I should say, because they're doing the alien hunting. Speaker 1: So, yeah, it's just going to be really interesting. Speaker 1: And I hope that none of these are rushed because they are coming out so quick, like close to each other. Speaker 1: But I think if they've learned anything from past movies, they've probably had all of this in the works for a long time and have just been kind of cleaning it up along the way.

Speaker 1: So I think we're going to be okay, but I'm not going to hold my breath just because we have been disappointed on multiple Speaker 2: occasions. Speaker 1: But again, I have a little bit of higher hopes for this because I think that they know what they're doing. Speaker 1: So fingers crossed that this all works out. Speaker 1: Again, don't forget Killer of Killers comes out June 6th on Disney+.

Speaker 1: So stay tuned. Speaker 1: If I hear anything else, I will let you know. Speaker 1: But I will also definitely give you my opinion on it after I watch it. Speaker 1: Okay, and we're going to end this on some Tron news because I have been waiting 15 years for this. Speaker 1: As have many of you most likely. Speaker 1: I absolutely love Tron.

Speaker 1: We're getting lucky here because there's a lot of things that I really enjoy and they are just banging out movies left and right on them. Speaker 1: So I believe it was last week. Speaker 1: Actually, I think it was during WonderCon. Speaker 1: We got a couple new views on Tron Ares and we've got a trailer. Speaker 1: It's it's a really cool take on it.

Speaker 1: You know, we're going back to the grid. Speaker 1: Well, technically, we aren't going to the grid. Speaker 1: The Grid is coming to us, which looked scary as all hell. Speaker 1: Because could you imagine? Speaker 1: Just, wow. Speaker 1: That would, yeah, no, I would not be very happy at all if I saw anything from The Grid coming Speaker 1: towards me in the real world.

Speaker 1: Absolutely not. Speaker 1: Now, we are picking up where Tron Legacy left off, and Jared Leto will be starring as Ares. Speaker 1: And he's basically a program that escapes the grid and enters reality and has some pretty dark intentions for the real world, you know. Speaker 1: So, yeah, it's just giving me more AI vibes, which make me nervous.

Speaker 1: But, Speaker 2: you know, hey, Speaker 1: hey, I swear movies, some of them just become reality. Speaker 1: Hopefully not this much reality, please, because that would be crazy. Speaker 1: Now, I was reading some things and they were talking to the director and he actually had this kind of funny yet interesting take on the character Ares.

Speaker 1: And pretty much he called him like Pinocchio. Speaker 1: He basically said Ares wants to be a real life boy, not entire quotes, but essentially that's the gist of it. Speaker 1: He wants to be real. He wants to live in the real world. Speaker 1: And I mean, I guess growing up in the grid, is that what we would say? Speaker 1: You know, there's not really any real world experiences there.

Speaker 1: So I can kind of see why maybe intentions are thought to be dark. Speaker 1: Roening says it's like he's a newborn seeing the world for the first time, which is, again, another interesting take. Speaker 1: Because if you think about seeing things just for the very first time, it's overwhelming. Speaker 1: It's amazing. Speaker 1: It's unexpected.

Speaker 1: It's scary. Speaker 1: Again, being a program, how much in regards to feelings is, it remains to be seen. Speaker 1: And obviously that'll be shown in the movie. Speaker 1: But the movie is apparently going to be diving really deep into identity and what it really Speaker 1: means to be human. Speaker 1: So I think it's going to have some really good aspects on humanity, identity, you know, Speaker 1: just trying to live in the world.

Speaker 1: So I'm really curious about it. Speaker 1: Now, Ares is actually getting some visual updates. Speaker 1: His identity disc is going to be a little more sleeker. Speaker 1: And it also doubles, obviously, as a weapon. Speaker 1: But don't worry if you are an OG fan of the classic. Speaker 1: We're still going to have our nice circular discs.

Speaker 1: So don't worry, it's still going to be, we're going to have old school, new school, okay? Speaker 1: We're just going to blend it all together. Speaker 1: It's, you know, so I'm excited about that because I didn't want anything to change too much. Speaker 1: But watching the trailer, you can tell that they definitely kept a lot of things looking the same, Speaker 1: even though, I mean, they really didn't give us much to, I don't want anything spoiled.

Speaker 1: So I'm okay with that, but still, just don't, don't change it too much. Speaker 1: That's all I ask. Speaker 1: Bottom line is, Ares is breaking out, obviously. Speaker 1: Stakes are even bigger, and Tron is evolving. Speaker 1: So we definitely have a lot to look forward to when this movie comes out.
