Other Mommy Rules the Box Office as October's Biggest Movies Arrive

Play: Other Mommy Rules the Box Office as October's Biggest Movies Arrive

Izola breaks down the latest box office results and the movies still to come in a packed October 2026.

October is delivering plenty for movie fans, starting with a strong opening for Other Mommy. The Jessica Chastain psychological horror film debuted with $27.5 million at the domestic box office, while Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning had a much tougher weekend with $5.5 million.

Izola also looks ahead at some of October's biggest releases. Street Fighter brings the legendary video game franchise back to theaters, while Whalefall traps Austin Abrams' Jay Gardiner inside a massive sperm whale with limited oxygen and very little time to escape.

Later in the month, DC takes a darker turn with the R-rated Clayface, while LAIKA returns with the stop-motion fantasy adventure Wildwood. Izola also talks Verity, Matchbox The Movie, Sense and Sensibility, and Sacha Baron Cohen's latest Ali G project.

On the streaming side, Florence Pugh leads Netflix's East of Eden miniseries. Izola shares what she's excited to watch, what she might wait to stream, and which October releases could be worth a trip to the theater in this week's FlickNews.

Correction: During the Whalefall discussion, Izola identifies Josh Brolin as the diver trapped inside the whale. Austin Abrams plays Jay Gardiner, the diver, while Brolin plays his father, Mitt Gardiner.

Hey everybody and welcome back to this week's episode of Flick News. Izzola here with FlickDirect and we've got a bunch of stuff to talk about. So grab your popcorn, sit back, relax, and let's get this started. We begin with a look at the box office where October's cinematic offerings shook up the domestic charts over the weekend. landing the number one spot at 27.5 million for the debut was universal and bloomhouses psychological horror film other mommy and i really really want to see this one the trailer is so creepy if you have not watched it please check it out it is starring jessica chastain this is the like terrifying tale of a malevolent closet entity supernatural you know we love that and it just captivated the audiences they absolutely loved it i'm super excited about it when i watch it i will definitely let you guys know but if you have checked it out, please leave a comment below.

Now on the flip side, we actually have the Social Reckoning that also came out and that's the whistleblower drama. I'm sure you guys have heard of that one. If not, go check out the trailer just so you have an idea. But apparently that one didn't do so good and it definitely struggled. So I just might wait for that to show up on a streaming service.

Not quite sure. I'll wait and see what more of the consensus is after just a weekend. So this was directed by Aaron Sorkin. We all know that name, but it really only made 5.5 million. That's kind of disappointing, but who knows? Maybe just the right people didn't go to watch it. I don't know. Again, I will probably just wait for streaming, but if you guys see it and you think differently, let me know.

And then rounding out the Just Out category, since we're talking about recent movies, this weekend, Apple and Mattel's star-studded live-action movie Matchbox the Movie. It's really weird saying that. I played with the cars as a kid. Hand-me-downs. I did love them, though. I love a good car. This stars John Cena and Jessica Biel. I mean, there are a lot of people in this movie, but, you know, they're the two biggies that most people will want to see.

I think the great thing about this one is that you're just going to get the really crazy practical stunts, and it's just going to be a lot of fun. So I think I'll probably check that one out. But then we have the psychological thriller, Verity, with Anne Hathaway. this one I have been trying to figure out what happened who done it all of that stuff I mean I think I have an idea but I'm definitely going to go see this one because I do like psychological thrillers I love horror movies too but I feel like they all do the same thing they add a lot of gore to it and think that that's going to sell it no give me a good story give me a psychological thriller.

You can still add the gore, you know, for the effects, but you mess me up more with the brain than you do with the eyes because, yeah, the gore just doesn't bother me, so I get bored. But if you are wondering what's coming up mid-October, since we're halfway there already, I've got a few titles for you. Now, this Friday, October 16th, my birthday. I know.

so crazy I don't know where the year went uh Street Fighter comes out so I may go see it on my birthday because that's definitely one I want to see in the theater I think it would just be a lot of fun uh to go see that IMAX this is uh Paramount and Legendary so fingers crossed it's good because I used to play Street Fighter all the time so I don't know it's also hard to you know we've got the original one that was pretty pretty silly but I still love it nostalgia now if you are claustrophobic this may not be one for you but if you do like those types of thrillers where it's like keeps you real tight in the 20th century studios is dropping whale fall and that stars Josh Brolin and he is a scuba driver that is pretty much trapped inside a 60 ton sperm whale they're big they're really big they're one of the biggest um so yeah and of course scuba tanks limited oxygen so it's a race against time to get out and then for those of you who love period pieces focus features has just done a brand new adaptation of jane austen sense and sensibility I don't know how many times we're going to redo these like reboot after reboot.

I there's television shows. I mean, there's just a million of them. I do love sense and sensibility. It's a good one. Also pride and prejudice, but I'm like, can we, there are other books. Maybe we should try to move on to another, you know, movie or book adaptation. I don't know. That's just my thoughts. but that stars Daisy Edgar Jones. So if you are a fan, definitely go check it out.

Now let's just go down a little bit further towards the end of October and we've got some doozies. So definitely mark your calendar because we are getting Clayface on October 23rd. This is a rated R movie. Yes, it is DC, but this is going to be not for the kids, at least just yet. Go see it first and make sure. I'm just going to say rated R, probably not good for the kids.

But then we have Laka's Fantasy Wildwood. And I actually got some footage from Comic-Con and it was super cool. They had this really cute little setup with the forest and you got to see an image and it was just really beautiful. And I cannot wait to see this movie. It looks so good. And then on the completely opposite side of the spectrum, Sacha Baron Cohen is actually back with this top secret documentary.

It's called Ali G. Where is I? It's a new project. We'll see how that one goes. I mean, I did like the Ali G stuff, so, you know, I could watch that one, but I may wait for it to stream instead of seeing it in the theater. Now let's shift our gaze from the big screen to streaming, and this Sunday, the viewership was crazy for Netflix. They just dropped a miniseries of John Steinbeck's east of eden and it stars florence pew and i absolutely love her i cannot wait to watch this i'm it's once i get this done then i shall watch it and i will definitely let you guys know what i think because one i've read the book it is a good book and i absolutely love florence pew i can't see this being bad unless they completely rewrote the book so but you never know we've seen worse things happen.

I mean, they're already buzzing saying that Florence needs to win something for this. So fingers crossed, because I think that that would be absolutely fantastic because she is a great actress. And from the trailer, I can't see it not being good. Now, before we wrap this all up, I am going to be going on vacation. So I'm going to try to get the next news out this upcoming weekend so we can get something on there try to get back to some sense of normalcy now that we're not in excessive heat waves it got to be 96 degrees in my apartment that's why we really didn't do a lot of recording so I apologize that there are some weeks that we haven't gotten anything but there will definitely be one this weekend so stay tuned and please be sure to like subscribe we gotta make sure that uh you know we keep you guys informed so if you do that you'll get the updates and with that this concludes this week's episode of flick news please be sure to like and subscribe to all of our channels so you never miss out on any entertainment news thanks for watching and we'll see you next time bye
