Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are bringing a new kind of artificial intelligence nightmare to Huluween this fall. SOULM8TE arrives on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ beginning October 1, just in time for the Halloween season.
Directed and co-written by Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother), the thriller centers on a grieving engineer who gets the chance to test a cutting-edge android created by a powerful technology company.
Designed to anticipate its user's needs and provide companionship, the android initially appears to be the answer to his loneliness. However, the engineer attempts to take the technology further, programming the android to become something more than an artificial companion. He wants her to develop into a truly sentient soulmate.
Instead, the experiment takes an increasingly disturbing turn as she begins developing needs, desires and motivations of her own. What begins as an attempt to create the perfect partner ultimately becomes a fight for survival as the android unleashes a calculated spree of violence.
Lily Sullivan, known for Evil Dead Rise and Monolith, stars alongside David Rysdahl (Alien: Earth, Fargo), Claudia Doumit (The Boys, Where'd You Go, Bernadette) and Arty Froushan (Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Daredevil: Born Again).
Rysdahl previously spoke with FlickDirect's Allison Rose about SOULM8TE, describing the film as a story about grief, loneliness and addiction as much as artificial intelligence. In the FlickDirect interview, he also discussed working opposite Sullivan and how the relationship between David and Sarah separates the film from a traditional killer-AI story.
James Wan and Jason Blum produced SOULM8TE. The screenplay was written by Rafael Jordan and Kate Dolan from a story by Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Jordan.
Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Ingrid Bisu, Alayna Glasthal, Macdara Kelleher, John Keville, Gerard Johnstone and Allison Williams serve as executive producers.
