Christopher Nolan's thriller returns to theaters January 29, 2027, celebrating 20 years with its first IMAX presentation and special 70mm, 35mm, and digital screenings.

Christopher Nolan's The Prestige is returning to theaters on January 29, 2027, as part of its 20th-anniversary celebration. The Walt Disney Studios announced the nationwide re-release today, October 20, exactly 20 years after the film originally opened in U.S. theaters. The engagement will include the film's first IMAX presentations, along with screenings in 70mm, 35mm and digital 2D.

Disney has also unveiled a new theatrical poster commemorating the film's anniversary.

"I'm very excited to bring The Prestige back to the big screen, and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time," Nolan said.

Although The Prestige was not filmed with IMAX cameras, this will mark the first time the movie has been presented in the format. Nolan has become closely associated with large-format filmmaking, making the IMAX release an interesting addition to the film's anniversary.

Starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson, The Prestige follows two rival magicians whose professional competition develops into a dangerous obsession.

Set in turn-of-the-century London, the story centers on Robert Angier (Jackman), a charismatic showman, and Alfred Borden (Bale), a gifted illusionist. Initially friends and partners, their relationship collapses after a stage illusion goes tragically wrong.

What follows is an escalating rivalry marked by deception, sabotage, and increasingly elaborate illusions as both men become consumed with creating the ultimate magic trick.

The film's structure mirrors the three stages of a traditional magic trick, using misdirection and carefully revealed information to keep audiences questioning what they have seen.

Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan adapted the screenplay from Christopher Priest's novel of the same name. The film was produced by Emma Thomas, Aaron Ryder and Christopher Nolan.

Upon its original release, The Prestige received two Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. Its intricate storytelling and performances have helped it maintain a following in the years since.
