After the death of their father leaves the Dashwood family facing an uncertain financial future, sisters Elinor and Marianne must leave the comfort of their family estate and begin again under far more modest circumstances. While practical and reserved Elinor tries to conceal her feelings for Edward Ferrars, the passionate Marianne is swept into a romance with the charismatic John Willoughby, even as the steadfast Colonel Brandon remains close by.
