20th Century Fox Planning Planet of The Apes Prequel

Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox will be releasing a "Planet of the Apes" prequel, tentatively titled, "Rise of the Apes".

The film will be set in San Francisco, and will be about man's experimentation with genetic engineering and how it develops into a struggle with the apes and their increasing intelligence.

Peter Jackson's visual effects company, WETA, will be used to work on photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors.

Rupert Wyatt will be directing with Chernin Entertainment producing. The film is slated for a June 24, 2011 release.
