Synopsis of Werwulf (2026)

In 14th-century England, a man and his wife live under a growing curse that seems to hang over both their home and the surrounding countryside. Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads as the afflicted farmer, while Lily-Rose Depp plays the woman caught beside him as fear, superstition, and bodily transformation begin to take over. Robert Eggers sets the story in a harsh medieval world where language, ritual, and folklore feel inseparable from daily life. Around them, the landscape and the people in it become as threatening as the creature that may be emerging from within.

Rather than treating the myth as a simple monster hunt, Werwulf frames the werewolf legend as a test of devotion and salvation. Willem Dafoe's hunter figure adds another layer of menace, while the village's beliefs turn the curse into a communal crisis. Eggers' film appears to push its characters toward a choice between surrendering to the darkness or holding onto whatever remains human in them. The result promises a grim period horror story about love under pressure, religious dread, and the terror of becoming the thing everyone already fears.
