The Disney "Buddies" franchise has been going since "Air Bud" in 1997. The series has now expanded to "Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups" the sequel to the film of the same name. This type of film is definitely aimed at the youngest of audiences, though clearly a family affair. Saying the jokes are obvious is an understatement. Despite any obvious flaws any level headed adult would have, this movie is worth the entertainment and joy it will bring your children.
The North Pole has a new litter of playful pups. However, when the frisky foursome-Hope, Jingle, Charity and Noble-practically destroy Santa's Workshop with their mischievous roughhousing, they realize the best way to prove that they're responsible enough to become Santa's helpers is to show how well they can spread the Christmas spirit all by themselves. With help from a magic crystal, they start granting everyone's wishes. But their good intentions backfire when one unhappy boy asks that Christmas go away forever! With his wish impetuously fulfilled, and the joyous spirit quickly disappearing from the planet, Mrs. Claus and the pups have to find a way to reverse the spell-or risk losing Christmas forever.
Cheryl Ladd, whom you may recognize from Charlie's Angels, plays Mrs. Clause. She helps the young pups go about righting their mistake while providing a more human element for audiences to relate to. All the music for the film comes is original and while done well, don't expect to hear anything that may become the next Christmas music classic. Perhaps the only redeeming thing about this film is that the film doesn't attempt to talk down to its audience. The team behind the film clearly knew whom their audience would be and at no point made any attempt to portray the film as something less than it is.
"Santa Paws 2″ comes in a combo pack with Blu-ray and DVD disc. The video is sharp and works well for the very colorful Christmas town that is created. The audio track also complements the movie's score quite well. The special features are a little light for Disney but kids will still enjoy them. "Santa Pups Music Mash-Up:" where the pups take over a radio station then play clips from the film's songs. "Blooper Scooper:" some funny outtakes and other on-set Antics from the production. Lastly, there are some trailers for upcoming Disney Blu-ray trailers for "Return to Neverland" and "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh".
"Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups" is a fun family adventure that provides simple laughs for all kids of a young age while giving parents something to enjoy together with their children without having to worry about content. It works well for what it is and hoping for anything more will only leave you wanting. Despite all that, it's a worthy purchase for any family.
