The upcoming "Independence Day" sequel, "Resurgence" released its first trailer for the film, and Will Smith's character, Col. Steven Hiller, was conspicuously absent. But what happened to the beloved Col. Hiller? Well, a new website fills us in.
The viral website, titled "The War of 1996", allows guests to navigate throughout the site and educate themselves on the events that took place during the 1996 attack and those events that transpired after. According to the site, Hiller died on April 27, 2007 - "While test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller's valor in the War of '96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan."
Hiller's son, played by Jessie Usher, will attempt to fill his father's shoes in the war with aliens. He will be starring alongside Vivica A. Fox, Liam Hemsworth, Judd Hirsch and Bill Pullman.
"Independence Day: Resurgence" will be released on June 24, 2016.
