Moonlight, the film that won the Academy Award this year for Best Picture, has gained some momentum in theaters since winning this past Sunday. The film is now running an at least 1,500 theaters.
The film was played at about 580 locations during the Feb. 24-26 weekend, earning $591,201, bringing their total to $22.1 million. Following the historic win at the Oscars, however, the film is on its way to nearly tripling its domestic earnings. Moonlight was also released on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, and will, no doubt, gain some new fans.
La La Land was named Best Picture at the Oscars, after Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong envelope to read, and only after a few minutes did they realize that the wrong film has been announced, and that Moonlight was the actual winner.
Moonlight stars best-supporting actor winner Mahershala Ali along with Naomie Harris, Janelle Monae, Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, and Alex R. Hibbert.
