Ridley Scott has moved forward with planning a sequel to 2000's blockbuster Gladiator, which starred Russell Crowe. The film earned 11 Oscar nominations and won five, including Best Actor for Crowe and Best Picture.
The storyline will follow the life of Lucius, Lucilla's (Connie Nielsen) son and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix).
Scott will return as director with Paramount, possibly with Universal co-financing. Scott will also be producing the film through his Scott Free banner alongside Red Wagon's Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher and Parkes + MacDonald's Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.
