"Old Guard" was released by Netflix earlier this month, and fans of the film are looking forward to what seems to be an almost definite sequel. However, even though the film left off on a cliffhanger, we may not see the sequel anytime soon.
There are many reasons for a delay in development, one being the availability of Charlize Theron. Not only is she in high demand and have a full schedule, but there would also have to be contract negotiations. Theron's popularity would command top dollar, and while Netflix definitely has spent a lot of money on programming, sequels usually command even more.
Another factor in getting this sequel made would be talks with the film's writer and graphic novel creator Greg Rucka (which hasn't happened yet) and talks with director Gina Prince-Bylthewood to return. This could all happen soon but combined with getting Theron and others on board, it could prove to be a lengthy process.
We will keep a watch on any new developments for this film.
