Disney Cuts Metaverse Unit in First Wave of Company Wide Layoffs

Disney has cut their Next Generation Storytelling & Consumer Experiences group as part of some cost-cutting measures under the interim regime of Bob Iger. The group housed the company's metaverse unit. This cut affects about 50 employees and is part of the first wave of layoffs, which will ultimately end in the slashing of 7,000 jobs.

The team was led by company veteran Mike White, who served as SVP. His other responsibilities in the company have included leading Disney's consumer digital products team, overseeing the technology strategy, engineering and product teams charged with developing digital experiences across brands including ABC, ABC News, Disney, ESPN, FX, Marvel, National Geographic, and Star Wars. In 2022, former CEO Bob Chapek appointed White to the position.

Disney's Next Generation Storytelling & Consumer Experiences team focused on developing new and innovative ways to engage with audiences and enhance the overall entertainment experience. The team's goal was to leverage technology and creativity to create immersive and personalized experiences that bring Disney stories to life in new ways.

The team is responsible for a wide range of initiatives, including developing interactive experiences for theme parks, creating new digital products and services, and exploring new forms of storytelling through emerging technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence.

Some of the notable projects that have been developed by Disney's Next Generation Storytelling & Consumer Experiences team include the MyMagic+ system at Walt Disney World, which allows guests to plan their vacation and make reservations through an app and MagicBand wristband, and the Play Disney Parks app, which offers interactive games and experiences while visiting the parks.

There will be a second wave of cuts next month, and a final wave at the beginning of summer.

Bob Iger returned as the CEO of The Walt Disney Company in November 2022 after his predecessor, Bob Chapek, was ousted after a brief and tumultuous stint in the role.
