New York Film Critics Circle Announces 2023 Award Winners: 'Killers of the Flower Moon' Takes Best Film

Today, the New York Film Critics Circle convened at Film at Lincoln Center to deliberate on the winners of their 2023 awards. The recipients will be officially acknowledged during the annual ceremony on Wednesday, January 3, 2023, at Tao Downtown.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" clinched the title of Best Film, marking the third occasion a film directed by Martin Scorsese has received this prestigious award. Christopher Nolan earned the distinction of Best Director for "Oppenheimer," while Lily Gladstone secured the Best Actress award for her role in "Killers of the Flower Moon." Additionally, Franz Rogowski was honored as Best Actor for his performance in "Passages." The accolade for Best Animated Film went to "The Boy and the Heron," marking the fourth time a Studio Ghibli film directed by Hayao Miyazaki has claimed this honor. A Special Award was presented to Karen Cooper, recognizing her five decades of creative leadership as the director of Film Forum. The student scholarships were awarded to Mick Gaw and Katherine Prior. The full list of winners is provided below.

NYFCC Chair Matt Singer of ScreenCrush expressed excitement about the outstanding slate of winners, stating, "As always, the members of the NYFCC have chosen an outstanding, exciting slate of winners. I can't wait to honor them all at our annual dinner in January."

Established in 1935, the New York Film Critics Circle stands as the oldest critics group in the country, holding a position of prestige. The NYFCC comprises critics from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, and respected online publications. Annually, the organization convenes to vote on awards for films from the calendar year, often influencing the trajectory of Awards Season. The awards dinner in early January is not only a celebration of cinematic achievements but also marks the commencement of a new year filled with glamorous events in New York City.
