LAIKA's beloved 2009 stop-motion animated film Coraline has earned over $51 million at the global box office, since its re-release on August 15th. This achievement comes thanks to a partnership with Fathom Events in the U.S. and Trafalgar Releasing internationally, offering the film in newly remastered 3D and 2D formats.
As part of the 15th-anniversary celebration, the screenings also feature an exclusive preview of LAIKA's upcoming film Wildwood, making Coraline a must-see event of the summer.
The weekend box office numbers indicate that the film brought in an additional $1.3 million domestically, raising its U.S. total to $32.5 million. Internationally, the film collected another $672,608, bringing its total outside the U.S. to $18.7 million, and pushing the global earnings to $51.3 million since the August 15th re-release. In many regions, this anniversary re-release has surpassed the film's original 2009 box office performance.
More markets are joining in on the re-release, including France (from November 1 to November 30) and Italy (from October 31 to November 30).
David Burke, LAIKA's Chief Marketing & Operations Officer, said, "We are thrilled with the global success of the Coraline re-release. Not only has Coraline become Fathom's highest-grossing release in the U.S., but it also broke box office records in several international markets, including the UK and Mexico, thanks to our collaboration with Trafalgar Releasing. We're grateful to the millions of fans who experienced Coraline in stunning remastered 3D on the big screen this summer, transforming the 15th anniversary into a cultural event."
Burke added, "A huge thank you to our partners at Fathom and Trafalgar Releasing, and to the loyal fans, for solidifying Coraline's status as a timeless classic that will continue to delight audiences for generations."
Coraline is a captivating and suspenseful stop-motion animated film written and directed by Henry Selick (known for The Nightmare Before Christmas and Wendell & Wild). Featuring the voices of Dakota Fanning, Ian McShane, Teri Hatcher, Keith David, John Hodgman, and British comedy duo Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders, the film was nominated for both an Oscar® and a Golden Globe, won the Cristal Award at Annecy, and was listed among the year's top films by the American Film Institute (AFI). It also won three Annie Awards for Best Music, Character Design, and Production Design.
The story follows 11-year-old Coraline Jones (voiced by Fanning), a curious and brave girl who moves with her parents (Hatcher and Hodgman) from Michigan to Oregon. Bored and seeking adventure in her new home, Coraline stumbles upon a hidden door that leads her to an alternate world. This parallel universe appears much like her own life, only better, with more attentive parents and a seemingly perfect environment. However, when her visit turns sinister and the Other Mother (also voiced by Hatcher) plots to keep her there, Coraline must use all her courage and wit to escape and save her real family.
