One of the most iconic Gen X films will be getting a sequel - "The Goonies 2" is officially in the works nearly 40 years after the original was released.
Potsy Ponciroli has signed on with Warner Bros. to pen the script with Lauren Shuler Donner executive producing, and Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario producing for Amblin Entertainment alongside Chris Columbus. No word yet on who will direct or what the plot details will be.
1985's "The Goonies" starred Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton. The film follows a group of kids who discover an ancient treasure map and embark on a thrilling quest to save their neighborhood. Directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg, the film was a box office success, earning $125 million worldwide against a modest $19 million budget. Over the decades, the film has become a cult classic and was even recognized for its cultural significance, with the Library of Congress selecting the film for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2017.
Fast forward to today, and Ke Huy Quan, who played the inventive Data in "The Goonies", is enjoying a career resurgence. Following his Academy Award-winning performance in "Everything Everywhere All at Once", Quan has continued to thrive in Hollywood, most recently starring in the Disney+ series "Loki" and the newly released action film "Love Hurts", which debuted in theaters last week.
The excitement surrounding "The Goonies" was reignited at the "Love Hurts" world premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, where Quan reunited with his former co-star Corey Feldman. As fans continue to hope for a sequel or reunion, Quan addressed the lingering question on everyone's mind.
"It's one of the most asked questions in my life," Quan said when asked about a potential "Goonies" reunion. "I would love for it to happen," he told Variety.
Feldman echoed the sentiment, adding a dose of optimism. "All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean's looking good. Josh is looking good. We're all looking good still, and we're all alive. Goonies never say dieā¦ There's hope."
