Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has unveiled its latest Onyx (ICD model) cinema LED screen at CinemaCon 2025, setting a new benchmark in cinema display technology. Since pioneering the cinema LED market in 2017, Samsung has continuously evolved its technology to deliver industry-leading picture quality, exceptional reliability, and scalable display solutions that cater to the dynamic demands of theaters worldwide.
"The cinema industry is focusing on delivering immersive and visually captivating experiences. With Onyx, Samsung offers the highest-quality visuals and the flexibility theaters need to redefine the movie-going experience and meet changing audience expectations," said Hoon Chung, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.
Samsung Onyx, the world's first DCI-certified cinema LED display, delivers an unmatched viewing experience with true black levels, an infinite contrast ratio, and outstanding color accuracy. The display supports frame rates of up to 4K 120Hz, ensuring ultra-smooth motion and razor-sharp details.
To accommodate varying theater sizes, Onyx is available in four standard screen sizes with flexible scaling options:
5 meters (16ft) - Perfect for boutique and smaller-format theaters (Pixel pitch: 1.25mm)
10 meters (33ft) - The industry standard for premium cinemas (Pixel pitch: 2.5mm)
14 meters (46ft) - Ideal for delivering an impressive large-scale cinematic experience (Pixel pitch: 3.3mm)
20 meters (66ft) - A large-format solution for premium auditoriums (Pixel pitch: 5.0mm)
Onyx supports scope (2.39:1) and flat (1.85:1) aspect ratios, allowing films to be displayed as intended without adjustments. Its advanced scaling ensures proportional expansion of content without distortion.
Unlike traditional projectors that struggle with brightness and washed-out colors, Onyx's enhanced brightness ensures rich shadow details, vibrant highlights, and superior color accuracy. Featuring Samsung's HDR technology, Onyx achieves peak brightness levels of 300 nits (87.6fL), six times brighter than conventional cinema standards, ensuring high-brightness scenes retain clarity and impact.
"As the entertainment industry looks toward the future, innovation is key. The new Onyx Cinema LED screens provide truly immersive experiences, reminding audiences why the theater remains the ultimate destination for visual storytelling," said David Phelps, Head of Display Division at Samsung Electronics America.
With its industry-leading brightness and precision, Onyx is well-suited for alternative content such as live sports, concerts, gaming events, and corporate presentations, offering a premium viewing experience beyond traditional movies.
Onyx is designed for long-term performance, offering the cinema industry's first and longest 10-year warranty, setting a new standard in reliability. This extended coverage reduces the total cost of ownership and ensures a future-proof investment for theater owners.
Samsung also provides an auto-calibration solution to maintain optimal picture quality, allowing theaters to easily adjust and fine-tune their screens during installation and routine maintenance.
For seamless integration, Onyx is compatible with both Dolby and GDC IMB media servers, facilitating a smooth transition from traditional projection systems. This ensures efficient content management and playback.
In terms of audio compatibility, Onyx integrates seamlessly with leading cinema audio solutions, including Dolby Atmos, Meyer Sound, QSC, and custom-designed sound systems. Theaters utilizing HARMAN's JBL surround sound technology will also benefit from optimized audio performance through Onyx's advanced integration capabilities.
Samsung Onyx is one of the most widely adopted cinema LED screens worldwide, redefining premium cinema display technology. One of the latest installations includes Pathé Palace in Paris, where Onyx enhances the theater's premium viewing experience.
Laure de Boissard, Managing Director of Pathé Cinéma France, praised Onyx's capabilities. "At Pathé, we strive to provide the highest-quality cinematic experience. Samsung Onyx allows us to achieve stunning visuals with exceptional brightness and contrast, ensuring every film is presented as intended."
Looking ahead, Cannon Beach, a 37-acre mixed-use development in Mesa, Arizona, will be the first U.S. location to introduce the latest Samsung Onyx in its seven-screen movie theater, LVL 11 Entertainment. Opening in Fall 2025, LVL 11 will offer a mix of movies, go-kart racing, bowling, arcade games, karaoke, and private event spaces. Moving iMage Technologies (MiT) played a crucial role in designing LVL 11's innovative theater experience, which features Samsung Onyx technology and Dolby Atmos immersive audio.
Adam Saks, Chief Operating Officer of LVL 11 Entertainment, highlighted Samsung's role in redefining the cinema experience. "We partnered with Samsung because of its commitment to innovation. By introducing the Samsung Onyx Cinema LED Screen in Arizona, we are offering an entirely new experience, not just a movie."
Samsung Onyx is also transforming filmmaking by working closely with major studios. Samsung has collaborated with Pixar Animation Studios to master films such as Elemental, Inside Out 2, and Elio in HDR for Onyx, ensuring superior brightness, contrast, and color accuracy. Through these partnerships, Onyx continues to push display technology forward, enabling filmmakers to bring their creative visions to life with unmatched precision.
Dominic Glynn, Senior Scientist at Pixar Animation Studios, emphasized the impact of Onyx on cinematic storytelling. "At Pixar, we believe in creating shared experiences that feel larger than life. The Onyx screen technology delivers astonishing brightness, clarity, and color, elevating every moment of the story and making cinema an unforgettable experience."
