Lionsgate is set to take the John Wick universe to new heights with an exciting animated feature and a highly anticipated fifth installment in the blockbuster action franchise. Announced at CinemaCon by Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, these new projects promise to expand the beloved world of the legendary assassin while maintaining the signature stylized action fans adore.

The animated John Wick film that will delve into the past of Keanu Reeves' iconic character, exploring the Impossible Task-the pivotal mission in which John Wick eliminates all his rivals in one night to earn his freedom from the High Table and be with the love of his life, Helen. Animation veteran Shannon Tindle will direct this feature (Ultraman: Rising, Kubo and the Two Strings), written by Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones, Divergent, The Shape of Water). Keanu Reeves is expected to reprise his role, lending his voice to the assassin. The production team includes franchise veterans Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment, and Keanu Reeves. Alex Young and Jason Spitz of 87Eleven Entertainment will serve as executive producers.

Fogelson expressed excitement about the animated film, stating, "In both animation and the world of John Wick, the possibilities are endless. Shannon's take on the Impossible Task is incredible, and we can't wait to see John Wick in animation." Stahelski, who has long been inspired by anime, believes that animation is the perfect medium to further expand the John Wick universe.

Following the massive success of John Wick: Chapter 4, which grossed over $440 million worldwide, Lionsgate has officially confirmed John Wick: Chapter 5. The franchise has amassed over $1 billion globally, with each film surpassing the box office earnings of its predecessor. Fogelson confirmed that Reeves, Stahelski, and producers Iwanyk and Lee will return, ensuring that the next chapter delivers another high-octane adventure. "Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world. We can't wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next," he stated.

Beyond film, the John Wick universe continues to grow. The first spin-off, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas as an assassin trained by the Ruska Roma, is set for release on June 6, 2025. Directed by Len Wiseman, the film was written by Shay Hatten and produced by Iwanyk, Lee, and Stahelski. Additionally, a new spin-off film centered around Donnie Yen's character, Caine, is in development. Yen, known for his work in Ip Man, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and John Wick: Chapter 4, will not only reprise his role but also direct the film. Production is set to begin later this year in Hong Kong. Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II, BRZRKR) has joined as the film's writer, building upon a previous draft by Robert Askins.

Fogelson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Donnie is not only an incredible star but a brilliant director who knows how to deliver action for a global audience. We're thrilled he's helming Caine's story."

Stahelski added, "One of my favorite characters in the John Wick world is Caine. To have the chance to dive into his world excites us all. We envision a modern-day kung fu classic, and Donnie is the perfect director to bring it to life."

Lionsgate is fully committed to expanding the John Wick universe through multiple platforms. The company has already seen success with The Continental: From the World of John Wick on Peacock and Amazon Prime, and is currently developing John Wick: Under the High Table, executive produced by Reeves and Stahelski. Additionally, Lionsgate is working on a AAA John Wick video game and recently launched an immersive John Wick experience in Las Vegas.
