AMC Orders a New Point Break Series That Looks to Recapture the Adrenaline, Friendship, and Philosophy of the 1991 Cult Classic
It is time to bring 100% pure adrenaline to AMC. As reported by Variety, the network ordered a Point Break TV series. Although the production is not starting until 2027, fans of the 1991 film will be counting the days until Bodhi and Johnny face off in another epic standoff.
The original Point Break starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah. Patrick Swayze, as Bodhi, led a ragtag group of surfers as they racked up robbery after robbery. As Johnny infiltrated the group, he learned to catch more than just a wave. The conditions kept changing, but he was never afraid to step into that gnarly challenge.
The upcoming AMC series will be led by showrunners and executive producers Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers. Kalstein has worked on shows including Quantico and NCIS: Los Angeles.
Point Break is more than just a movie. It's a way of looking at the world.

Previously, a Point Break remake hit theaters in 2015. While it had moderate box office success, critics were not as kind. The consensus was that it missed the mark on many levels.
With the new AMC Point Break series, it appears that the creative team will want to focus on living life to the fullest. "The Ultimate" refers to Bodhi continually seeking extreme experiences regardless of the consequences.
While that "ultimate" concept can easily be captured with jaw-dropping extreme sports and compelling visuals, there is a sentimentality that needs to connect the audience with the characters. The real draw of the original movie was the characters. As long as the new series focuses on Johnny, Bodhi, and their relationship, it should resonate with fans of the cult film. Given that this new version is a series, not just a two-hour movie, the show can dive deeper into the characters and plotline.
It seems likely that there will be a modern take on the classic story. No one is expecting the showrunners to rewind back to the early '90s. Whether the "Ex-Presidents" now feature Obama and Trump versus Reagan and Carter robbing banks remains to be seen.
For now, take an afternoon and rewatch the original Point Break with Reeves and Swayze. Do not hesitate to take that opportunity to drop into a classic.
