Anticipation is heating up for James Gunn's "Superman", and early signs point to a potentially massive box office debut. Fandango has revealed that advance ticket sales for the film's Amazon Prime Early Access screenings have shattered records, becoming the platform's biggest first-day ticket seller of 2025. The film surpassed all other titles' general first-day ticket sales so far this year, including the much-hyped "Fantastic Four: First Steps" from Disney and Marvel Studios.
Importantly, these aren't complimentary promotional passes; Amazon Prime members are purchasing these early access tickets.
The exclusive Prime Early Access event, available only via Fandango, gives Amazon Prime members the chance to see "Superman" early on Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m. local time. That's three days before the movie's wide release in theaters and IMAX on July 11.
According to Fandango's 2025 Moviegoing Trends & Insight Study, which polled over 5,000 moviegoers, "Superman" was ranked among the most anticipated films of the summer. Furthermore, in a separate survey of over 9,000 Fandango ticket buyers, Nicholas Hoult's portrayal of Lex Luthor was singled out as one of the most eagerly awaited performances of the year.
While no official tracking data has been released yet, neither from The Quorum nor other analytics services, industry insiders are already speculating that "Superman" could be eyeing a $100 million-plus opening weekend. If it delivers, the film would become one of the biggest comic book movie launches in recent memory and mark a significant milestone for DC Studios under the leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran.
Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" debuted in 2016 with a $166 million Easter weekend haul. His earlier effort, "Man of Steel", opened to $116.6 million in 2013, while "Justice League" saw a softer $93.8 million debut in 2017.
So far, the highest-grossing film opening of 2025 belongs to another Warner Bros. title: "Minecraft: The Movie", with a $162.7 million debut. In the comic book arena, the top earner of the year to date is Marvel's "Captain America: Brave New World", which brought in $88.8 million over its first three days.
Still looming large over the entire genre is the record-breaking performance of "Deadpool & Wolverine", which bowed in July 2024 with a staggering $211.4 million, setting the all-time record for an R-rated movie opening.
