Reality TV icon and business mogul Kim Kardashian is reportedly in talks to take on the villain role in Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming “Bratz” live-action film. This potential casting is the latest development in what Amazon hopes will be a major franchise-starter in the same cultural vein as 2023’s box office juggernaut “Barbie”.
According to sources, the streaming and retail giant recently won a heated bidding war to acquire rights to the “Bratz” movie, and while specific plot and casting details are still under wraps, Kardashian’s involvement in a central antagonist role hints that the film won’t shy away from blending high fashion, drama, and signature Bratz attitude.
The film is being developed by a powerhouse creative team. Charlie Polinger and Lucy McKendrick are penning the screenplay, with Erik Feig and Julia Hammer producing under the Picturestart banner. Kardashian herself will serve as a producer, along with Jason Larian and Jasmin Larian of MGA Entertainment, the company behind the Bratz brand. MGA CEO Isaac Larian is also on board as executive producer.
The project is part of Amazon MGM’s broader strategy to capitalize on nostalgic toy properties with cinematic potential. Following the groundbreaking success of “Barbie”, which became the highest-grossing film of 2023 with over $1.44 billion in global ticket sales, studios are scrambling to replicate the formula. A flood of toy-inspired films is currently in development, including big-screen adaptations of “Hot Wheels”, “Polly Pocket”, “Barney”, and “Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots”.
The Bratz doll line, first introduced in 2001, quickly became a cultural phenomenon. Known for their bold fashion sense and diverse identities, the four core Bratz girls—Yasmin, Cloe, Sasha, and Jade—represented a more rebellious counterpoint to the traditional Barbie image. The brand has reportedly sold over 200 million dolls worldwide and boasts the highest level of social media engagement of any toy brand, according to Amazon MGM.
It should be noted that past attempts at live-action have stumbled. A 2005 Lionsgate “Bratz” movie failed to gain traction both critically and commercially, and while several animated TV series and video games helped maintain brand visibility, the dolls have never fully broken through on the cinematic front.
Kardashian rose to fame with “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and has since launched her multibillion-dollar shapewear brand Skims, but has recently focused more on acting. In 2023, she garnered attention for her role in “American Horror Story: Delicate” opposite Emma Roberts, surprising audiences with her performance.
Kardashian has also voiced characters in both “PAW Patrol: The Movie” and its sequel, “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie”. Next, she is set to headline the Netflix comedy “The Fifth Wheel”, directed by Eva Longoria, and will appear in Ryan Murphy’s star-studded legal drama “All Is Fair”.
