20th Century Studios is officially moving forward with a reimagining of its beloved franchise. In partnership with 21 Laps Entertainment, the project has enlisted screenwriter Tripper Clancy (Stuber, I Am Not Okay with This) to craft the script for what is described as a fresh take on the magical museum concept.
While specific plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, insiders say this reboot will feature an entirely new story and an all-new cast of characters. Rather than revisiting the story of Larry Daley and his band of historical sidekicks, the film is expected to breathe new life into the franchise by exploring a different corner of the same enchanted museum, or perhaps a different museum altogether, where history once again comes alive after hours.
Franchise creator and original trilogy director Shawn Levy will return to the fold as a producer alongside Dan Levine under their 21 Laps Entertainment banner. Emily Morris is set to oversee development for the company, marking another collaboration between Levy's team and 20th Century Studios, following a string of successful projects including Free Guy and The Adam Project.
The series launched in 2006, becoming an instant family hit thanks to its blend of comedy, adventure, and magical mayhem. The original film starred Ben Stiller as Larry Daley, a down-on-his-luck father who takes a night guard job at the American Museum of Natural History, only to discover that the exhibits spring to life after dark due to an ancient Egyptian artifact. The star-studded cast also included Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt, Owen Wilson as miniature cowboy Jedediah, Rami Malek as Pharaoh Ahkmenrah, and Ricky Gervais as the museum director, among others.
The success of the original sparked two live-action sequels: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009) and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014), both of which were helmed by Levy and continued the antics across new museum settings and legendary historical figures. In 2022, the franchise took a new turn with an animated film, Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again, which debuted on Disney+ and featured a voice cast including Joshua Bassett, Gillian Jacobs, Jamie Demetriou, and Zachary Levi.
Collectively, the first three live-action films brought in more than $1.3 billion at the global box office.
No release date has been set, and casting details remain under wraps.
