After smashing past the $331 million mark to become the highest-grossing Man of Steel film in U.S. box office history in just its first month, James Gunn's "Superman" will now be heading into your living room. The blockbuster will make its North American digital debut on Friday, Aug. 15, strategically timed for fans who want to catch up before the highly anticipated second season of Gunn's hit series "Peacemaker" arrives.
The digital launch comes one week before "Peacemaker" returns to HBO Max on Friday, Aug. 22, ensuring that fans can connect the dots between the two DC Studios projects. Physical media collectors won't have to wait much longer, either. "Superman" will land on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD starting Sept. 23.
Gunn previously revealed that the accelerated digital release was no coincidence, explaining it was carefully planned around Peacemaker's schedule, saying, "Well, it's very complicated, but the truth is it is because of Peacemaker. I originally thought Peacemaker was going to be coming out next month. There were a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that Peacemaker is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see Superman that wanted to, even those people who couldn't get to a theater before Peacemaker. And that's really the reason for it."
The connection between the two projects is more than just a marketing move. "Superman" directly sets the stage for events in "Peacemaker" Season 2. In a mid-credits teaser, the film introduces key supporting characters who will play a role in the upcoming season, including Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders, and Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord. Their appearances hint at larger storylines that will unfold in Gunn's expanding DC Universe.
Fans who purchase the film digitally will also be treated to a suite of bonus content. The digital edition will include a gag reel, never-before-seen deleted scenes, and a full-length director's commentary from Gunn. For those who have already bought the movie on digital platforms, these extras will be automatically added at no additional cost.
The physical release will pack even more behind-the-scenes material for collectors and die-hard fans. Featurettes include Adventures in Making Superman, an in-depth look at the production process; Lex Luthor: The Mind of a Master Villain, a profile on Nicholas Hoult's menacing take on the iconic adversary; Paws to Pixels: Krypto is Born, exploring the creation of Superman's superpowered canine; The Justice Gang, spotlighting the film's ensemble of DC heroes; and A New Era: DC Takes Off, examining how Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran are reshaping the franchise.
"Superman" is the first official chapter in Gunn's reimagined DCU, kicking off the "Gods and Monsters" phase. Since taking over leadership of the studio alongside Safran in 2022, Gunn has made it clear he intends to craft an interconnected universe that blends blockbuster spectacle with character-driven storytelling.
Currently still playing in theaters, "Superman" stars David Corenswet in his highly anticipated debut as the iconic hero. Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of fearless reporter Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of master manipulator Lex Luthor.
