Jordan Peele's highly anticipated fourth film as a director looks like it will take longer to reach audiences than originally planned.
Universal Pictures has officially removed the untitled project from its release calendar. The studio had most recently pegged the film for an October 2026 debut, but with production still in early stages and cameras yet to roll, the date is no longer realistic.
This marks the second major delay for the Oscar-winning filmmaker's follow-up to "Nope". Initially, the new film was announced for a Christmas 2024 release. The dual strikes by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA pushed that timeline back, with Universal later eyeing Halloween 2026 as a fitting new slot. Now, the studio has opted to pull the project altogether from its schedule until Peele is further along in the process. Universal declined to comment, while representatives for Peele have not yet responded to inquiries.
As is often the case with Peele's work, secrecy surrounds the project. Plot details remain entirely under wraps, though it has been categorized as a horror thriller. The filmmaker has developed a reputation for weaving socially conscious themes into genre storytelling, a formula that propelled "Get Out", "Us", and "Nope" into both critical and commercial success.
Peele spoke about his excitement for the film during a 2024 appearance on Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, saying, "I do feel like my next project is clear to me, and I'm psyched that I have another film that, you know, could be my favorite movie if I make it right."
In the meantime, Peele remains active as a producer. Universal is preparing to release "Him", a sports horror film produced by Peele and featuring rising star Tyriq Withers (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Atlanta). The story follows a rookie football player whose dreams of glory take a chilling turn after he is mentored by a legendary quarterback, played by Marlon Wayans. The film blends the grit of competitive sports with supernatural terror, offering a fresh angle within the horror genre.
Early industry buzz has singled out Wayans' performance as a surprising, dramatic showcase, with many predicting it could redefine his career, which is best known for comedy. Fans will be able to judge for themselves when "Him" arrives in theaters on September 19.
