Hulu has officially greenlit "Prison Break", a new series from Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James, marking the return of the iconic thriller franchise. The streamer has ordered the pilot to series.
In this modern take, the story centers on a female soldier-turned-corrections officer who accepts a position at one of the most dangerous prisons in America. Her motives, however, are deeply personal; she's driven by love and a determination to test just how far she'll go to protect someone who means everything to her.
The new "Prison Break" stars Emily Browning (American Gods, Sleeping Beauty) as Cassidy, the determined protagonist at the heart of the story. She's joined by Drake Rodger (The Winchesters) as Tommy, Lukas Gage (The White Lotus) as Jackson, Clayton Cardenas (Mayans M.C.) as Michael "Ghost," JR Bourne (Teen Wolf) as Junior, Georgie Flores (Euphoria) as Andrea, and Myles Bullock (BMF) as Darius "Red." Together, the ensemble brings a mix of familiar faces and rising stars to the gritty reboot.
The original "Prison Break", created by Paul Scheuring, debuted on Fox in 2005 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The series followed Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), a structural engineer who deliberately had himself imprisoned to rescue his wrongfully convicted brother, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), from death row. The story concluded in 2009 with the television film "The Final Break", but fan demand led to a revival in 2017, which brought back Miller and Purcell for a limited fifth season.
Nearly two decades later, the franchise continues to capture audiences with its blend of family drama, criminal intrigue, and psychological intensity. Every season of the original series is currently streaming on Hulu, allowing longtime fans, and a new generation of viewers, to revisit the groundbreaking show that redefined serialized television storytelling.
Elgin James will serve as showrunner, executive producer, writer, and director on the new series. He's joined by original creator Paul Scheuring, along with Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, all of whom were instrumental in developing the original "Prison Break".
