Hollywood celebrates Tom Cruise’s four-decade career as he accepts an Academy Honorary Award for his impact, legacy, and dedication to the art of filmmaking.
On November 16, Tom Cruise received one of the film industry's most prestigious accolades, as he was presented with an Academy Honorary Award during the 2025 Governors Awards. The evening, already known as an unofficial kickoff to Oscar season, turned into a celebration of Cruise's four-decade legacy as one of cinema's most influential and enduring movie stars.
The award was presented by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who is currently directing Cruise in an upcoming, still-untitled feature slated for release in October 2026. Upon taking the stage, Cruise delivered an emotional tribute to the global community of artists, technicians, and audiences who bring movies to life. He also spoke eloquently about the powerful, unifying effect cinema has across cultures.
"The cinema, it takes me around the world. It helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so, so many ways. And no matter where we come from, in that theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form. And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am," Cruise said.
He added, "My love for cinema began at a very early age, as early as I can remember. I was just a little kid in a darkened theater, and I remember that beam of light just cut across the room, and I remember looking up, and it seemed to be just exploded on the screen. Suddenly, the world was so much larger than the one that I knew. And entire cultures and lives and landscapes all unfolded in front of me, and it sparked something. It sparked a hunger for adventure, a hunger for knowledge, a hunger to understand humanity, to create characters, to tell a story, to see the world. It opened my eyes. It opened my imagination to the possibility that life could expand far beyond the boundaries that I then perceived in my own life. And that beam of light opened a desire to open the world, and I have been following it ever since."
Cruise has been nominated for four Academy Awards and is widely regarded as one of the most dedicated performers in Hollywood. His nominations include Best Actor nods for "Born on the Fourth of July" and "Jerry Maguire", a Best Supporting Actor nomination for "Magnolia", and a Best Picture nomination for his role as a producer on "Top Gun: Maverick".
This year's Governors Awards also recognized several other influential figures in the entertainment world. Cynthia Erivo presented choreographer, actor, and producer Debbie Allen with an honorary Oscar for her trailblazing contributions across television, film, and theater. Production designer Wynn Thomas, known for his extensive influence on the visual identity of modern cinema, likewise received an honorary statuette celebrating his lifetime of work.
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award went to global icon Dolly Parton, honored for her decades of philanthropy, songwriting, and generosity. Parton was unable to attend the ceremony in person due to health concerns, but she delivered a heartfelt pre-taped acceptance speech.
Always serving as a high-profile gathering for talent entering the thick of awards season, the Governors Awards red carpet was attended by Jennifer Lawrence, Michael B. Jordan, Sydney Sweeney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, Emma Stone, and many others.
