Like many people of a certain age, I recall the anticipation of playing skeeball, eating pizza, and enjoying the ultimate celebration at Chuck E. Cheese. The event may have lasted just a few hours, but it was the hot topic at school.
Fast forward many years, and I took my own kids to that arcade. Instead of Galaga and Space Invaders, it was racing games and basketball supremacy that piqued their interest. Darting back and forth from the table to the play area, those weekend diversions were carefree.
Today, Chuck E. Cheese still captures those moments. While the classic characters have modernized their look, the songs have a new beat, and the games are flashier, the fun that captures everyone’s playful side remains.
Recently, Chuck E. Cheese opened Chuck’s Arcade in collaboration with Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier. During the special grand opening, I spoke with Chuck E Cheese CEO David McKillips.
Seeing Chuck’s Arcade perched on Cocoa Beach’s sandy shore proves that all ages find diversions in every form. One minute, the people can be splashing in the waves. Then, they can dissolve into rambunctious laughter as they race their way to pole position.
McKillips shared that Chuck E. Cheese is the “largest arcade in the entire world.” With 1.3 billion games, the company balances trends with classics.
More importantly, the company understands that it needs to engage guests beyond the arcade. Given that Chuck E. Cheese is a huge IP itself, the company keeps those characters and concepts front and center in people’s minds.
He explained that its first animated special on Amazon Prime, A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas, is a key example. Debuted on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, the family film infuses what fans love about the brand. It features beloved characters, new original songs, and the playfulness that all generations will appreciate.
Designed to appeal to a wide audience, the animated film uses music to capture the sentiment of the season. As many people appreciate, songs are an integral part of the brand. These holiday tunes could become the next viral seasonal moment.
More importantly, the new movie is an extension of Chuck E. Cheese’s current focus, connecting all platforms to give fans more access. From YouTube channels to social media platforms, the company is more than just earning a high score at the arcade.
McKillips believes that reaching guests is vital to the brand’s longevity. He calls the arcade experience “the treat down the street.” While people might periodically have that in-person moment, the other platforms keep the connection going.
“We keep the momentum in the relations through a myriad of things. Our active YouTube and online channel, our Roku streaming network, downloadable games, licensing program, and the new A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas are all examples of how we keep firing.”
Understanding that Chuck E. Cheese is a global brand, the company appreciates that it must evolve and adapt. One way is to include international trends in its offerings. Given that the brand is in 17 countries, the company infuses new concepts and games to the delight of guests.
Speaking about trends, McKillips explained that it is more than just sophisticated game play that guests want. One trend is “participatory.” Being able to play against a partner, parent, or friend turns the high score into a different, valuable prize. It is bragging rights until the next round.
Additionally, McKillips said that “Clawcades” earn prime space in the arcades. At the Chuck’s Arcade at the Cocoa Beach Pier, these games dominated the space.
According to McKillips, the gaming trend comes from Asia. People desire that collectible prize. It becomes a prize position, a shareable moment, and a memento that draws people back to repeat the experience.
What is next for Chuck E. Cheese? Given the brand’s iconic IP, arcade success, and new holiday movie, this playful mouse is ready to dominate the pop culture world. More movies, new locations, and other ways to make more memories are coming. The brand has a dominant high score, but it is ready to exceed it.
