Audiences looking to add a little humor to their holiday watchlists will have a new title to enjoy this season. "Re-Election", the latest feature from filmmaker Adam Saunders, is set to arrive on Apple TV and Amazon for purchase or rental on December 15, bringing a warm, goofy, and surprisingly heartfelt twist to the classic underdog story.
The comedy, which debuted in U.S. theaters this fall, brings together an ensemble featuring Saunders himself alongside Bex Taylor-Klaus, Nathalie Kelley, and beloved television icon Tony Danza. Early viewers have already been charmed by the film's mix of throwback nostalgia, modern-day chaos, and unexpected emotional depth.
"Re-Election" centers on Jimmy Bauer (Saunders), a former high school hopeful whose humiliating defeat in the 1995 race for class president pushed him to drop out of school altogether. Fast-forward 30 years: Jimmy is now a 40-something working in his father's memorabilia shop, still haunted by the election that derailed his life. Danza plays Jimmy's dad, adding his signature mix of warmth and comic timing.
Determined to rewrite his story, Jimmy returns to high school to complete his missing credits, and most importantly, to finally win the election he believes he was destined to win decades ago. But the halls of high school have changed dramatically since the '90s. With guidance from his Gen-Alpha classmate Noa (Taylor-Klaus) and support from his rekindled flame Ama (Kelley), Jimmy must navigate a new social landscape and rediscover what victory really looks like.
The film blends the absurdity of "Billy Madison" with the satirical bite of "Election", offering a coming-of-middle-age tale about growth, redemption, and the surprising people who help us get back on track.
After premiering at New York's Regal Union Square on October 10, "Re-Election" continued its theatrical rollout at venues including the Angelika Film Center in Dallas and The Springs Cinema & Taphouse in Atlanta. The release was especially meaningful for Saunders, a Texas native returning to Dallas just ahead of his own 30th high school reunion, and yes, he really did serve as class president.
Bob Berney, CEO of Picturehouse, praised the film's reception in early screenings, saying, "This nostalgic and heartfelt comedy about giving yourself and others a second chance really resonated with audiences around the country. We're thrilled that viewers everywhere can now enjoy this funny film at home, just in time for the holidays."
Saunders continues to expand his footprint as a multi-hyphenate creator. Before "Re-Election", he wrote, directed, and starred in Dotty & Soul, which premiered on Showtime in 2023. Through Footprint Features, the company he co-founded, he has also produced projects for major studios including Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and 20th Century Studios.
The film's distributor, Picturehouse, has a long legacy in independent and specialty cinema. Originally founded in 2005 under Time Warner, HBO Films, and New Line Cinema, the company is currently led by CEO Bob Berney and COO Jeanne R. Berney, and continues to champion global content across platforms.
"Re-Election" is now available for pre-order on Apple TV and will roll out across Apple and Amazon on December 15, a festive, feel-good pick for anyone craving a holiday movie with laughs, nostalgia, and a reminder that it's never too late for a comeback.
