The Oscar-winning animated film is heading to the stage with top-tier talent bringing Mumble’s story to life
The beloved animated hit Happy Feet is heading to the stage, as a brand-new Broadway musical adaptation is officially in development. The Oscar-winning film, known for its energetic dance sequences and uplifting story, is being reimagined for live theater with an award-winning creative team already in place.
This adaptation reflects a growing trend of beloved animated films finding new life on Broadway, blending nostalgia with live performance to reach both longtime fans and new audiences.
Two-time Tony Award winner Michael Arden has signed on to direct the production, bringing his acclaimed theatrical vision to the project. The musical is being produced by Dori Berinstein, whose past credits include major Broadway successes. Writing the book is Douglas Lyons, while choreography will blend tap and contemporary styles under the direction of Ayodele Casel and the duo Lauren Yalango-Grant and Christopher Grant.
First released in 2006 by Warner Bros., Happy Feet follows Mumble, a penguin born into a community where singing defines identity, except he can't sing. Instead, Mumble expresses himself through tap dancing, setting off a journey that challenges tradition and celebrates individuality. The film's mix of humor, heart, and music resonated with audiences worldwide, helping it earn an Academy Award and become a global box office success.
The stage adaptation will incorporate songs from the original film alongside a selection of popular hits, aiming to capture the same vibrant musical spirit that made the movie so memorable. The original film featured an all-star voice cast including Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman, and Hugh Jackman, among others.
Behind the scenes, the musical will feature a powerhouse design team. Set design will be handled by Dane Laffrey, with costumes by Susan Hilferty and lighting by Natasha Katz. Puppetry, expected to play a key role in bringing the penguin characters to life, will be designed by Basil Twist. Music arrangements and supervision will come from Kenny Seymour and Jackson Teeley.
The original film, along with its sequel Happy Feet Two, was directed by George Miller and collectively grossed more than $847 million worldwide.
