CinemaCon 2026 Opens With Sony Surprises and a Fresh Focus on the Future of Moviegoing
CinemaCon 2026 officially opened today at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and FlickDirect was on hand to cover every major announcement, panel, and presentation as the global theatrical exhibition industry gathered for its biggest annual event. Be sure to visit FlickDirect’s CinemaCon hub for continuing coverage, interviews, and breaking news throughout the week.
This year’s opening day felt different from the start. Traditionally, CinemaCon begins with panels focused on international markets and box office trends, but Cinema United introduced a new “Educational Day” format designed to give attendees more targeted insight into key areas of the business.
From 9 a.m. to noon, attendees could choose from three educational tracks covering Audiences and Innovation, Food and Beverage, and Technology. Each track featured three sessions exploring different topics, and many of the rooms appeared to draw strong attendance. It will be interesting to see how Cinema United refines this new format based on feedback, but the early response suggested exhibitors appreciated the added flexibility.
After lunch, Cinema United unveiled another new initiative: the Film Showcase. Held inside the Dolby Colosseum, the two-hour presentation featured Angel Studios, Sony Pictures Classics, and StudioCanal, each offering previews of upcoming films and strategic insights into their theatrical plans.
Angel Studios opened the showcase by discussing its audience-driven model through the Angel Guild, which now boasts more than two million members. For those unfamiliar, the Angel Guild allows members of the public to help choose which films Angel develops and releases. The studio also highlighted its Pay It Forward ticketing program, which has provided more than three million movie tickets globally to underserved audiences.
Sony Pictures Classics followed with previews of several upcoming releases, including Unidentified and Bitter Christmas. The label also announced upcoming 4K theatrical re-releases of The Piano and Trainspotting, giving audiences a chance to revisit two acclaimed films on the big screen later this year.
StudioCanal, Europe’s largest film studio, then gave attendees a look at titles including Pressure and Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man. The company also announced a 4K theatrical re-release of Terminator 2, plans to reimagine Cliffhanger with Lily James, and shared an early look at Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom. Collectively, the afternoon presentations offered a wide-ranging glimpse at the diverse slate headed to theaters in the months ahead.
The evening’s main event belonged to Sony Pictures, which once again handled the opening night studio presentation and delivered one of the most energetic showcases in recent CinemaCon memory.
Sony kicked things off with a first look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day, generating one of the loudest reactions of the night. Sony Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman noted that the trailer had surpassed one billion views in just one week, underscoring the massive anticipation surrounding the next chapter in the franchise.
The studio also screened footage from Insidious: Out of the Further, which drew strong reactions from the crowd for its intense scares and unsettling atmosphere.
Anime fans were not left out, as Sony promised more films from popular franchises including Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, and The Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Sony also spotlighted literary adaptations, The Nightingale, starring Elle and Dakota Fanning, and Klara and the Sun, which stars Jenna Ortega.
Additional announcements included updates on The Legend of Zelda, Bloodborne, Helldivers, and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, with the latter featuring an early look at raw footage that generated excitement in the room.
To close the night, Sony confirmed another Jumanji film and brought Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Dwayne Johnson to the stage. Their playful chemistry and crowd interaction brought plenty of laughs before Sony debuted an early sneak peek to cap off the evening.
Day One of CinemaCon 2026 delivered a strong start, balancing meaningful industry conversations with crowd-pleasing studio reveals. With three more days still ahead, the week is already shaping up to be packed with surprises.
