The Golden Globes are embracing AI technology while drawing a firm line around human creativity and artistic control.
The Golden Globes have announced updated eligibility and submission guidelines for the 2027 awards season, including new rules surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in film, television, and podcast productions.
Submissions for the 2027 Golden Globes will officially open on June 1, with all entries for film, television, and podcast categories due by October 30.
According to the organization, the use of artificial intelligence, including generative AI, “does not automatically disqualify a work from consideration,” provided that human creative direction, artistic judgment, and authorship remain the primary driving force behind the production.
The new rules state that submitted works will be evaluated based on how much of the creative direction, artistic decision-making, and execution originates from credited individuals rather than AI-generated systems. While AI tools may assist during production, the organization emphasized that they cannot replace core creative contributions from filmmakers, performers, writers, composers, or other artists.
The Golden Globes Eligibility Committee also noted that productions using AI may be asked to provide additional information explaining how the technology was used during development. Failure to provide requested materials on time could result in a project being deemed ineligible.
The organization also clarified new rules for acting submissions. Performances entered into acting categories must primarily reflect the work of the credited performer and cannot be substantially generated through artificial intelligence.
The updated guidelines state that AI tools may be used to “enhance or support” a performance as long as the performance itself remains fundamentally human-driven and under the performer’s creative control. The organization additionally prohibited the unauthorized use of digital likenesses, voice replication, or biometric data.
In non-performance categories such as directing, writing, composition, and animation, submitted works will remain eligible if the primary creative contributions still originate from credited human creators. According to the rules, AI-generated tools may support production workflows but cannot replace human artistic authorship.
The Golden Globes also introduced updated podcast eligibility guidelines. Podcast nominees will now be selected exclusively from a curated “Top 30 Podcasts” list determined by Luminate during the January 1 through September 30 eligibility window. Rankings will be based on verified audience and engagement metrics.
Another significant change expands opportunities for international and independent films. Non-English-language and independent motion pictures may now be submitted for individual performance categories without requiring a simultaneous Best Motion Picture submission, provided they meet all other eligibility requirements.
The revised rules reflect the entertainment industry’s growing attempt to balance rapidly evolving AI technology with the preservation of human creativity. As studios and creators continue experimenting with generative tools, the Golden Globes appear focused on ensuring that artistic control remains firmly in human hands.
The 2027 Golden Globe Awards will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 10, with Nikki Glaser returning to host the ceremony.
