Rodrigo Sorogoyen Returns to Cannes with One of the Festival’s Most Emotional Premieres
At the 2026 edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen returned to the Official Competition with The Beloved (El Ser Querido), a deeply intimate drama led by Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo. Premiering on May 16 at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, the film quickly established itself as one of the most talked-about European productions of the festival, fueled both by Sorogoyen’s growing international reputation and the prestige of its cast. The premiere drew major attention on the Croisette as photographers and media outlets gathered for the arrival of the film team, including Raúl Arévalo, Marina Foïs, Mourad Ouani, and Raúl Prieto, reinforcing the event’s importance within this year’s competition lineup.
Co-written by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and longtime collaborator Isabel Peña, The Beloved centers on Esteban Martínez, an internationally celebrated filmmaker who returns to Spain to direct a new feature and unexpectedly casts his estranged daughter Emilia in the lead role. Their reunion, after more than a decade without contact, becomes the emotional foundation of the film as unresolved wounds and buried resentments gradually resurface throughout production. Set partly around the making of a fictional film titled Desierto, the story explores the fragile boundary between artistic creation and personal trauma while examining themes of family legacy, emotional abandonment, and reconciliation.

The project had already generated considerable anticipation well before arriving in Cannes. Originally announced by Movistar Plus+ in early 2024 without casting details, the production gained momentum when Javier Bardem publicly confirmed his participation later that year during the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Victoria Luengo’s involvement further strengthened interest around the feature, particularly among European cinema audiences familiar with her recent dramatic work. Sorogoyen himself described the film as an attempt to move outside his “comfort zone,” suggesting a more intimate and emotionally vulnerable approach compared to some of his previous socially driven thrillers.

Production took place primarily in Fuerteventura and Madrid, with cinematography handled by Álex de Pablo and editing once again entrusted to Alberto del Campo. Among the most discussed creative decisions surrounding the film was the revelation that the opening eighteen-minute sequence was filmed in a single take on the very first day of shooting. The scene reportedly captures the first emotionally charged meeting between the characters played by Javier Bardem and Victoria Luengo in a Madrid restaurant. To preserve the authenticity of that moment, the actors intentionally avoided rehearsing together beforehand, allowing the emotional distance between the characters to emerge more naturally on camera.
Beyond its emotional narrative, The Beloved also reflects the continued strength of Spanish auteur cinema within the international festival landscape. Following the critical acclaim of As Bestas and Madre, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s latest work arrives with significant expectations from both critics and festival audiences eager to see how the filmmaker evolves stylistically. Early reactions around Cannes suggested that the film’s quieter emotional intensity and character-driven approach distinguish it from the director’s previous tension-heavy work while still maintaining the realism and precision that have become central to his filmmaking identity.
Produced by Movistar Plus+, Caballo Films, El Ser Querido AIE, and Le Pacte, the film stands as another major Spanish-French co-production to emerge on the Croisette in recent years. Distributed in France by Le Pacte, The Beloved received a simultaneous Cannes and French theatrical release on May 16, 2026, before its planned Spanish release later in the summer through A Contracorriente Films. With its emotionally layered story, prestigious cast, and strong festival positioning, the film has already become one of the standout Spanish entries of the 2026 Cannes competition.
