Happy Gilmore Trailer Rewinds to Adam Sandler's 1996 Comedy Classic
Adam Sandler Takes His Hockey Swing to the Golf Course
The original trailer for Happy Gilmore takes us back to Adam Sandler's 1996 sports comedy about a hot-tempered hockey player who discovers an unexpected talent for golf. Desperate to save his grandmother's home, Happy brings his devastating slap shot, explosive personality, and complete disregard for golf etiquette to the professional tour.
Directed by Dennis Dugan, Happy Gilmore also stars Christopher McDonald as Happy's arrogant rival Shooter McGavin, alongside Julie Bowen, Carl Weathers, Frances Bay, and Richard Kiel. With its endlessly quotable dialogue, outrageous golf-course confrontations, and Sandler's signature comedy, the film became one of the defining comedies of his early career and remains a beloved 1990s favorite.
ABOUT HAPPY GILMORE
Happy Gilmore is a loud, fast-moving sports comedy about a failed hockey hopeful who discovers his violent slapshot translates perfectly to golf. When Happy learns his grandmother is about to lose her home, he jumps onto the pro tour to chase prize money any way he can. His raw talent is matched only by his temper, which turns every round into a spectacle and quickly makes him the most unpredictable player in the field. As Happy stumbles from one tournament to the next, he has to learn whether his game can be controlled long enough to keep his grandmother’s house out of foreclosure.
What gives the movie its staying power is the clash between underdog heart and full-blown slapstick. Adam Sandler’s title character is pushed along by retired pro Chubbs Peterson and complicated by his rivalry with smug tour favorite Shooter McGavin, while Julie Bowen’s Virginia Venit adds another layer to Happy’s offbeat rise. Directed by Dennis Dugan and written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, the film mixes golf, hockey, and broad comic set pieces into a very 1990s crowd-pleaser. It works as both a fish-out-of-water story and a character comedy about rage, loyalty, and the strange places talent can turn up.
