Synopsis of Four Rooms (1995)
On New Year’s Eve, newly hired bellhop Ted begins a shift at a fading Hollywood hotel and is left to manage an unusual succession of guests. Four episodes unfold in separate rooms as he carries out their requests. A group of witches needs help with a ritual; a couple’s bitter argument becomes a threatening bedroom encounter; two children left in Ted’s care turn their room into a scene of chaos; and a Hollywood gathering ends with a guest asking him to oversee a dangerous wager. Ted’s first night is no ordinary service shift: every room presents a different problem, and the inexperienced bellhop must decide how to respond while trying to keep the hotel’s celebration from collapsing around him.
The stories connect through Ted’s rounds at the Hotel Mon Signor, each encounter placing him in the middle of a guest’s private scheme or emergency. One couple’s accusation leaves Ted unsure whether the danger is real, while the children’s parents have paid him to watch them and their behavior quickly overwhelms his efforts to keep order. At the final party, a Hollywood director offers extra money to persuade Ted to referee a wager in which a man’s finger is at stake. Tim Roth plays Ted, whose first shift becomes a test of nerve, judgment and improvisation. The anthology brings together four separately written and directed segments by Allison Anders, Alexandre Rockwell, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, all set during the same New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles.
