On Monday, Legendary Pictures announced that they have obtained the rights to "Godzilla" and will be releasing a new film. The company will be co-producing and co-financing the film with Warner Bros.

Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary, said, "Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise. Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers will also be producing and Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira, and Doug Davison will executive produce.

Other joint ventures for Legendary and Warner Bros. include "The Dark Knight" and "300".

The film is slated for release sometime in 2012.
