Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' Dominates BAFTA Nominations with 13 Nods, Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' Snubbed in Key Categories

Christopher Nolan's film "Oppenheimer" leads the pack with 13 nominations at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, making it a strong contender. The atomic bomb biopic is recognized in categories such as best film, director (which could mark Nolan's first BAFTA win), and acting nominations for Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr. Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things" follows closely with 11 nominations, including best film and an actress nod for Emma Stone.

However, the noteworthy point of discussion is the surprising exclusion of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," despite its initial tie with "Oppenheimer" and "Killers of the Flower Moon" in Longlist slots. "Barbie" only secured five nominations, with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling among the recognized actors, but notable absences in best film and director categories. Other films like "Killers of the Flower Moon" and "The Zone of Interest" received nine nominations each, with some unexpected omissions in the director and leading actress categories.

On the industry front, Disney emerged with the highest number of nominations (22), propelled by the success of "Poor Things" and "All of Us Strangers." Film4, producing several nominated films, including "Poor Things" and "The Zone of Interest," achieved its most successful BAFTA outing in over 40 years with 30 nominations. The BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is scheduled for February 18, hosted by "Doctor Who" star David Tennant.
