Joe and Anthony Russo, renowned for their work on "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Endgame," might be making a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The filmmaking duo is reportedly in early discussions to helm "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" set for release in 2026, and "Avengers: Secret Wars" slated for 2027. These films are anticipated to mirror the interconnected storytelling style seen in the two-part saga of "Infinity War" and "Endgame," and will mark the conclusion of the MCU's current Multiverse Saga.

Marvel Studios has been actively searching for directors to take on these major projects after Destin Daniel Cretton, known for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," exited "Kang Dynasty" in 2023. Shawn Levy, the director of "Deadpool & Wolverine," was approached but declined the offer. In the meantime, "Loki" creator Michael Waldron has been tasked with writing the screenplay for "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty," though "Secret Wars" currently lacks a screenwriter. The search for directors comes amid uncertainty regarding the future of these films, partly due to Marvel's decision to part ways with Jonathan Majors, who portrayed multiple versions of the villain Kang, following his conviction for domestic harassment and assault.

While the timeline for the production of these "Avengers" installments remains unclear, Anthony and Joe Russo have continued their prolific careers. Their next film, "The Electric State," a sci-fi adventure featuring Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown, wrapped up filming in late 2022. Since "Endgame," the Russos have transitioned towards streaming projects, including Netflix's "The Gray Man" and Apple TV+'s "Cherry." They have also produced notable works like "Everything Everywhere All at Once," Amazon's "Citadel," and Netflix's "Extraction." With four Marvel films under their belt, including "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Captain America: Civil War," the Russos stand out as directors of two of the highest-grossing movies in history, joining James Cameron in achieving multiple $2 billion blockbusters.
