It's been reported that Sophie Turner is currently in negotiations to take on the iconic role of Lara Croft in the upcoming "Tomb Raider" series from Prime Video, Deadline has learned. The high-profile adaptation of the popular video game franchise is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios and developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the Emmy-winning creator of "Fleabag".

Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark on "Game of Thrones", would follow in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie, who starred in the early 2000s films, and Alicia Vikander in 2018's reboot.

The Tomb Raider series has been described as "epic" and "globe-trotting" by Amazon MGM Studios Head Jennifer Salke, who announced the series order in May. The show is a passion project for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who will serve as writer and executive producer. Waller-Bridge expressed her excitement for the series, noting the cultural significance of Lara Croft and her personal connection to the character: "Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can't wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all," she said at the time of the series' pickup.

The "Tomb Raider" franchise, which first introduced Lara Croft as a video game character in 1996, has since become one of the most iconic in gaming history. The character of Lara Croft, known for her daring exploits and adventurous spirit, has expanded beyond video games into films, comics, and novels. The 2018 film, starring Alicia Vikander, was a reboot that aimed to explore Croft's origins. This upcoming series, however, is expected to take the franchise in a new direction.

The "Tomb Raider" series will be executive produced by Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robins through Wells Street Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson through dj2 Entertainment, Michael Scheel, and the rights holders Legendary Television and Crystal Dynamics. Greenblatt and Andolina will consult under their Star Party banner. Crystal Dynamics, the game studio behind the "Tomb Raider" franchise, will also serve as a producer, alongside Amazon MGM Studios.

A representative for Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment on the casting news.
