The upcoming horror film, "The Mummy", directed by Lee Cronin, has added another star to its cast. Laia Costa, known for her critically acclaimed roles in both film and television, will star alongside Jack Reynor in this highly anticipated production from Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. The film, which has begun shooting in Ireland, marks a major collaboration between Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group and the recently merged horror powerhouses, Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. The movie is set for release on April 17, 2026.
Though the plot details are still under wraps, the project is generating significant buzz due to its talented cast and production team. Cronin, who is both writing and directing the film, made a name for himself with his directorial debut, "The Hole in the Ground", which premiered at Sundance in 2019. His follow-up feature, "Evil Dead Rise", released in 2023, became a major box office hit, grossing $147 million worldwide. His growing reputation in the horror genre makes "The Mummy" an exciting prospect for fans of the genre.
Costa first gained international recognition for her role in the single-take thriller "Victoria", which earned her Germany's LOLA Award for Best Actress and nominations for a European Film Award and the BAFTA EE Rising Star Award. Her film credits also include "Only You" with Josh O'Connor, "Newness" with Nicholas Hoult, "Duck Butter", "Piercing", and "Life Itself". She has also made a name for herself in television, starring in Prime Video's "The Wheel of Time", "Devils" for Sky Atlantic, AMC's "Soulmates", and HBO Spain's "Foodie Love". She also earned a Goya Award for "Lullaby" (Cinco Lobitos) and another nomination for "Un Amor".
Costa joins a stellar production team that includes producers James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville. The film is being co-financed by Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Alayna Glasthal serving as executive producers. The Mummy is expected to be a defining project for the newly merged Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, two of the most influential forces in modern horror.
Atomic Monster, founded by James Wan in 2014, has been behind some of the most successful horror franchises of recent years, including "The Conjuring" Universe, "Insidious", and "M3GAN". Blumhouse, led by Jason Blum, has produced major horror hits such as "Halloween", "The Purge", "Paranormal Activity", and "Five Nights at Freddy's". The merger of these two companies in 2024 has created a powerhouse of horror filmmaking, responsible for nearly 50% of the horror market in the last decade.
Doppelgängers, the production company formed by Lee Cronin, John Keville, and Macdara Kelleher, is also playing a key role in "The Mummy". Following the success of "Evil Dead Rise", the company aims to support ambitious and distinctive genre films. With a first-look deal at New Line Cinema, Doppelgängers is poised to be a significant player in the horror genre.
