Warner Bros. Leads Critics Choice Nods as 'Sinners' Dominates Awards Race

Warner Bros., soon to be acquired by Netflix, dominated the 31st Critics Choice Awards film nominations, led by Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" with a remarkable 17 nods and Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" with 14. Other major contenders include "Frankenstein" and "Hamnet", each scoring 11 nominations across key craft and performance categories. While musicals also made a strong showing, "Wicked: For Good" earned seven nominations, one of the morning's biggest surprises was the omission of Cynthia Erivo from the best actress lineup, despite her central role and awards buzz. International cinema saw notable snubs as well, with Jafar Panahi's Palme d'Or winner "It Was Just an Accident" shut out of directing and writing categories, continuing a trend of Critics Choice disconnects with Cannes favorites.

This year introduced several new competitive categories, including sound, stunt design, casting, and ensemble for film, as well as variety series for television. The Critics Choice Association also clarified a new rule preventing non-English-language films nominated for best picture, such as Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, from competing in the foreign-language category. With about 575 members voting, the organization remains a strong indicator of industry sentiment; last year's winners closely aligned with the Oscars.

The 31st Critics Choice Awards will air live on E! on January 4, 2026.
