A sequel to The Housemaid is officially in the works as Lionsgate responds to strong theatrical demand and global audience enthusiasm.
Lionsgate is officially moving forward with a sequel to The Housemaid following the film's breakout box office performance, announcing plans to begin production in 2026 on The Housemaid's Secret. The thriller has proven to be a major commercial success, earning more than $75 million domestically in its first 17 days of release and $133 million worldwide, with additional international territories still rolling out through January.
Based on the second novel in Freida McFadden's best-selling trilogy, The Housemaid's Secret has been in development for several months. Rebecca Sonnenshine, who adapted the first film, will return to write the screenplay. Producers Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures and Paul Feig and Laura Fischer of Pretty Dangerous Pictures are also back, with Hidden Pictures' Carly Elter and Alex Young and star Sydney Sweeney serving as executive producers alongside McFadden. The project is being developed with the expectation that Feig will return to direct and that Sweeney and Michele Morrone will reprise their roles.
"It's clear from both the global box office and from the outpouring on social media that audiences have responded strongly – and audibly – to the totally unique and truly theatrical experience of The Housemaid and want to know what happens next," said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson. "We believed in these stories from the very beginning, and we are beyond excited to bring the next chapter of Millie's story to life on-screen in collaboration with our outstanding creative partners Todd, Paul, Laura, Carly, Alex, and Sydney."
He added that The Housemaid's Secret is "another wildly thrilling book in Freida's series that has captivated readers worldwide." He said the studio looks forward to delivering "a similarly rousing and riotous moviegoing experience."
Lieberman praised the response to the film and the collaboration behind it, saying, "We're thrilled with the reception and incredibly proud of this entire team from Freida McFadden to our partners at Lionsgate, and the outstanding work of Paul and Laura. Most rewarding has been seeing how strongly audiences are connecting with the film."
Feig also pointed to the enthusiasm from moviegoers as momentum for the sequel. "It's been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew," he said. "We're lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie's journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences."
McFadden's Housemaid series has become a global publishing phenomenon, selling more than 12 million copies across all titles. The Housemaid's Secret accounts for four million of those sales, has been translated into 40 languages, spent 65 weeks and counting on The New York Times bestseller list, and won the 2023 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Thriller.
The sequel will again be overseen at Lionsgate by Chelsea Kujawa, who shepherded the first film, alongside Maria Ascanio.
Directed by Feig, The Housemaid stars Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins. The film follows Millie, a young woman attempting to escape her past, who takes a job as a live-in housemaid for a wealthy couple. However, she soon discovers that behind their polished façade lies a dangerous and seductive world of secrets, scandal, and power. The film was released by Lionsgate as a Hidden Pictures and Pretty Dangerous Pictures production.
