BAFTA Film Award Nominations Set Up Tight Race Between One Battle After Another and Sinners

The BAFTA Film Award nominations are shaping into a high-profile showdown between One Battle After Another and Sinners, with both films emerging as the most-nominated titles of the year. Paul Thomas Anderson’s political satire leads the field with 14 nominations, tying historic BAFTA heavyweights such as The King’s Speech and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Close behind is Ryan Coogler’s historical horror film Sinners, which earned 13 nominations — the most ever for a film directed by a Black filmmaker. The recognition also marks first-time BAFTA nominations for both Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan.

Also making a strong showing, Hamnet and Marty Supreme received 11 nominations each. Timothée Chalamet returns to the Leading Actor race for the second consecutive year, while Chloé Zhao makes BAFTA history with the highest number of nominations for a female director this year and stands as the only woman nominated in the directing category.

The Best Film lineup includes One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value, the latter earning 74-year-old Stellan Skarsgård his first-ever BAFTA nomination.

Beyond the frontrunners, British indie titles such as I Swear, Pillion, and The Ballad of Wallis Island broke out of the British film category and into major awards races. Notable snubs included Frankenstein, which earned eight nominations but missed Best Film and Director, and Wicked: For Good, which landed only technical nods.

The BAFTA Film Awards will be held on February 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, with Alan Cumming hosting.
